Women's Basketball Defeated By Seton Hall, 66-49

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Seton Hall, 66-49, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 31 in Providence, R.I. Melissa Langelier led four Pirates in double figures with a game-high 15 points and also contributed a game-high six assists in the win. Junior forward/center Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) led the Friar effort with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Seton Hall jumped out to a 8-2 lead over the first 4:05 of the game. The Friars cut the lead to two points (8-6) on a 4-0 run with 12:12 remaining in the half, but Seton Hall rattled off nine unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead with 5:34 left on the clock. Providence battled back to cut the lead to seven (19-12), but Seton Hall responded to earn its largest lead of the half (12 points) with 27-seconds remaining. Providence freshman Kris Baugh (Boston, Mass.) knocked down a three-point basket with seven seconds on the clock to make the halftime score, 27-18. Senior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) led the Friars in the first half with seven points, while three Seton Hall players tallied six points apiece.
In the second half, Providence closed the gap to five points (36-31) over the first 5:33 of play, but it would be as close at the Friars would get the rest of the way. Seton Hall pushed its lead to 15 points (48-38) with 9:02 remaining, and the Pirates finished the game on an 18-11 run, en route to a 17-point win (66-49).
Freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Quinn eached finished the game with 10 points for Providence. Joining Langelier in double figures for Seton Hall was Charlene Thomas (14 points), Ayanna Phillip (11 points) and Ashley Bush (10 points). Monique Blake pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for Seton Hall.
Providence College (4-14, 0-7 BIG EAST) will host West Virginia in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, February 4 in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium.
