BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College women's indoor track team competed at the Terrier Classic on January 30 at Boston University. In the first day of competition, PC junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) continued to shine for the Friars as she shattered the College's record in the 5,000 meters.
Smith, who ran the fastest 3,000 meters in the world this season on January 17, also was brilliant in the 5,000 meters as she finished the race in a time of 15:18.54. The previous PC record in the 5,000 meters was set in 1996 by Marie McMahon (15:42.71) at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship. Smith's time is also the second fastest time ever run by a collegian. Smith, who has already qualified for the NCAA's in the 3,000 meters, also qualified for the NCAA's in the 5,000 meters.
Junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) also was strong for the Friars as she was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000 meters. Cullen ran a time of 9:14.58 and finished third overall.
