Men’s And Women’s Track Team Compete At Raleigh Relays

Nine Friars set outdoor personal best times.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays, held at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C., from March 26 to March 28, with nine Friars recording outdoor personal bests.

The women's team displayed many strong performances, with sophomore Gabby Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia) leading the way, placing 22nd in the 5,000-meter race with a new personal best of 16:05.17.

Also in the women's 5,000 meters, senior Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) finished 47th in a time of 16:31.27. Freshman Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and sophomore Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Ireland) were having strong performances in the 5,000 before lightning struck at the 3,200-meter mark and the race was postponed.

In the 1,500 meters, senior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) was the leading performer for the Friars, placing 30th in 4:20.64. She was followed by freshman Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland), who finished 48th in 4:24.15.

Sophomore Chloe Higgins (Morristown, N.J.) and senior Jillian Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) ran nearly identical races in the 400 meters, posting 57.77 and 57.84, respectively. Junior Margaret Kemper (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) ran a personal best of 57.94 in the event.

In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Keira Kelly (Scotch Plains, N.J.) opened the season in 25.96.

Other impressive performances included junior Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand), who finished 33rd in the 800 meters in an outdoor personal best of 2:09.51.

Leading the way for the Friar men was freshman Oliver Neate (Sydney, Australia), who placed 34th overall and won his heat in the 1,500 meters in a personal best of 3:44.51.

Also racing in the 1,500 meters were junior Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand). Bartlett finished 41st overall and third in his heat in 3:45.36, while Pugh placed 46th in 3:45.70. Freshman Jack Dowd (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished in 3:52.12. All three Friars earned personal bests in the 1,500 meters.

Sophomore Ryan LoCicero (Bloomfield, N.J.) competed in the steeplechase, placing 45th overall and third in his heat in 9:11.19, a new personal best.

The 5,000-meter race featured sophomore Daniel Prescott (Christchurch, New Zealand), who ran a personal best of 14:08.21, finishing second in his heat and 48th overall.

In the 800 meters, sophomore Thomas Breen (Providence, R.I.) set a new outdoor personal best of 1:50.49, placing 16th overall and third in his heat, while junior Comiskey (Sherborn, Mass.) ran 1:53.84, and junior William Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand) finished in 1:54.08.

Senior Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.) raced in the 400 meters, finishing in 48.97.

The Friar men's and women's track teams will return to action at the Friar Invitational at Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field, Providence, R.I., on Friday, April 10.
