PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine's Michel Leveille registered a hat trick to lead the 12th-ranked Black Bears to an 8-4 win in men's HOCKEY EAST action over the Providence College Friars on Sunday, November 21 in Portland, Maine.
In a closely played first period, the Maine Black Bears netted the first goal of the game when Mike Hamilton broke down the right wing and fired a wrist shot from the middle of the circle that beat Friar netminder Tyler Sims high to the glove side at 7:54. The Friars pressured the 12th-ranked Black Bears and were able to tie the game at 1-1 with four seconds remaining in the period. Junior James Pemberton blasted a shot through a screen for his first goal of the season. Providence outshot Maine, 16-6.
The Black Bears wasted little time regaining the lead as Tim Maxwell wristed in a shot from eight feet just 2:19 into the first period. Maine extended its lead at the 6:44 mark when Josh Soares backhanded a rebound high into the net. With a 3-1 lead, the Black Bears did not let up as they peppered Sims with 20 shots in period. Maine added to its lead with two goals by Michel Leveille in the second period as they held a 5-1 advantage after 40 minutes of action. The offense continued in the third period as Providence came to life and added two quick goals to open the period. Jamie Carroll registered the Friars' second goal and Chris Chaput scored at 4:06 on a breakaway at PC got within two goals. However, Maine struck again with its sixth goal of the game at 4:39 of the third as Leveille completed the hat trick. Maine's Keith Johns scored at 10:09 before Chase Watson scored the Friars' final goal at 11:42. Wes Clark completed the scoring on the afternoon when he tallied the Black Bears' final goal at 17:09 of the third period.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, November 27 versus HolyCross in the opening round of the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
