ORONO, Maine -- The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 3-2, in its first conference game of the season on Saturday, November 20 at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Providence recorded a goal in each of the three periods.
Despite being outshot, 5-4, in the first period, Providence was able to get on the scoreboard early when junior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) recorded her third goal of the season from an assist from freshman Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) at 14:59.
At 15:49 of the second, Cheryl White evened up the game at 1-1, with an assist from Tristan Desmet. Providence stayed aggressive in the second, when Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) recorded her first goal of the season from an assist from freshman Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) who tallied her first collegiate assist on the play at 19:05. Maine's Kate Sunstrum fired a shot at the neutral zone that was saved by Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) to end the second period, 2-1.
The Black Bears struck again at the 2:20 mark of the third period and tied the game, 2-2, when White returned the favor with an assist to Desmet.
Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) awoke from a three-game scoring slump that gave Providence the lead, 3-2. The game-winning goal was assisted by Doolin and Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.) at 16:03.
Both Thomas and Maine's Rachel Gettings recorded 16 saves. The Friars continue their away-away series against Maine on Sunday, November 21 at the Alfond Arena at 2:00 p.m.
