The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team skated past Maine, 4-2, on Sunday, November 21 at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The freshman class of Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) and Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) produced half of the Friar offense in goals.
Tristan Desmet was first on the scoring column at 16:15 of the first from an assist by classmate Laura Maddin. Later in the period senior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) recorded her second goal of the weekend on the power play to even up the score, 1-1, at 13:09 with the assists from defensemanan Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis).
Late in the first period, Doolin recorded a short-handed goal at 18:24, her second on the season. Doolin stole the puck in the neutral zone which led into a one-on-one break-away goal. The Friars held a 2-1 advantage heading into the locker room.
Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) matched her jersey number with seven goals on the season at the 18:12 mark of the second period to increase the Friar advantage, 3-1. The Black Bears responded at 15:42 with a goal by Andrea Steranko, assisted by Kelly Law. The second period ended with Prrovidence on top, 3-2, and shots at an even 21 apiece.
Keilch contributed as she scored her first collegiate goal at 16:25 of the third period. Keilch patterned Doolin's previous goal as she stripped Kelly Law of the puck in the neutral zone and netted a goal past Rachel Gettings.
Gettings tallied 29 saves, while Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) posted 26 in the victory.
Providence will take on cross-town rivals, Brown University, on Saturday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the 10th annual Mayor's Cup at Meehan Auditorium.
