Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team (6-4-3) lost at Yale (7-4-0) this evening by the score of 5-1 in non-conference action at Ingalls Rink on the campus of Yale University. Bulldogs goalie Sarah Love (Bayfield, Ont.) made 39 saves in net.

Yale jumped on the scoreboard early as senior Erin Duggan (Beaumont, Alta.) scored her ninth goal of the season. The Canadian threw a wrist shot toward the net from just inside in right side of the blue line for the score. Sophomore forward Shelia Zingler (Wausau, Wisc.) assisted on the play.

The Bulldogs would add another first period tally as Zingler scored her third goal of the year, assisted by freshman Helen Resor (Greenwich, Conn.), 12:32 into the first period. That would make the score, 2-0, Bulldogs at the end of the first period.

Senior left wing Nicole Symington (Burlington, Ont.) kept the Yale pressure on as she scored her third goal of the season. She was assisted on the play by Zingler and sophomore Kelsey Johnson (Wayzata, Minn.), 5:58 into the second period.

PC would answer with a flurry of shots in the ensuing minutes, especially during a two-minute power play midway though the frame. Two shots nailed the pipes, but neither crossed the goal line and the Friars trailed, 3-0. The Friars would continue to pelt Bulldogs goalie Sarah Love with shots though out the period, but the junior refused to allow anything in. The Friars out shot Yale, 14-10 in the second period, and held a solid 25-20 advantage through 40 minutes of hockey, but had a blank scoreboard to show for it.

As the second half of the game turned into a dogfight with plenty of scoring chances on both sides, the Friars would finally put one home 3:43 into the third period as sophomore forward Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her eighth goal of the year. She put home a rebound off a shot by senior Rush Zimmerman (Gross Point, Mich.) giving the fourth-year player an assist.

Yale would answer four minutes later as sophomore Christina Sharun (Nanaimo, B.C.) tallied her second goal of the year. She was assisted by Duggan and Zingler 7:43 into the third frame. Yale would add another goal late in the third.

With tonite's loss, Providence women's ice hockey dropped its all-time record against Yale to 22-2-1. The Friars look to snap a two-game losing streak as they travel to Boston College on Dec. 3. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
