CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M) scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Providence College women's hockey team defeated Boston College, 2-0, on Friday, December 3 at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Watrous tallied her third game-winning goal of the season.
Neither team could score in the first two periods, as both goaltenders played strong. The Eagles forward, Sarah Courtney, created four scoring chances in the second period, but was rejected on all occasions by Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas). At the other end, Christine Moynihan held PC scoreless for the first two periods. Providence nearly gained the lead with 19:24 remaiining in the third period, as Karen Thatcher (D ouglas, Mass.) struck a shot alongside the right face-off circle that was saved by Moyhihan. Both teams stood scoreless until early in the third period.
In the third period the Friars took the lead for good. Kelli Doolin's (Dorchester, Mass.) fired a shot from a rebound shot by Watrous that was reflected by Moyhihan. Watrous regained the puck and scored her ninth goal of the season on the play to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage.
With 14:59 remaining in the third period, Thatcher capped the Friar offense with her twelfth goal of the season, assisted by Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) and Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) .
Providence edged the Eagles in shots, 29-28, while going 1-3 on the power play. The Friar penalty-kill unit went 5-5 in the victory. Thomas posted 28 saves, while Moyhihan recorded 27.
The Friars will face Boston College again at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. on Saturday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m.
