Women's Track Competes At Boston University Three-Way Meet

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College women's indoor track team finished in third place at the Boston University Three-Way Meet on Tuesday, February 10.
The Friars had four athletes win their respective races, led by junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) who captured the mile in a time of 4:30.61 to set a Providence College record. The previous record (4:35.27) was held by Amy Rudolph, who set the mark in February 1995. Smith, who shattered the PC record in the 5,000 meters earlier this season, automatically qualified for the NCAA's in the mile. She has already qualified for the NCAA's in two other events (3,000 meters and 5,000 meters).
Junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished in second place in a personal best time of 4:38.17. Cullen, who has qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 3,000 meters, also qualified for the NCAA's in the mile. Sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) took third in a personal best time of 4:41.71 and qualified for the NCAA's. Senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) also ran her best time (4:51.73) in the mile as she finished in fifth-place and qualified for the ECAC's.
In the 800 meters, senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) finished first and qualified for the ECAC's as she recorded a time of 2:10.46. Sophomore Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand) also was a first-place finisher as she ran a time of 2:53.62 in the 1,000 meters to qualify for the ECAC's. Junior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) competed in the 3,000 meters and placed first in a time of 10:03.02, 15 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Twarog qualified for the BIG EAST Championship.
Providence is back in action on February 13-14 at the St. Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass.
