Women's Basketball Defeated At Notre Dame, 81-51

SOUTH BEND, IND. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Notre Dame, 81-51, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 14 in South Bend, Ind. Fifth-year senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) scored a career-high 18 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the losing effort.
Five Notre Dame players reached double figures in the win. Jacqueline Batteast registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jeneka Joyce equaled Batteast with a career-high 14 points, all of which came in the first half. Courtney LaVere netted 12 points, while Teresa Borton and Megan Duffy added 11 points each. For Providence, junior forward/center Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) was limited to nine points and five rebounds.
Providence netted the first basket of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but Notre Dame responded with eight-straight points to take an 8-2 advantage over the first 2:32 of action. PC closed the gap to one point (14-13) with 11:35 remaining in the half on a 11-6 run.. The Friars were scoreless over the next 5:21, but Notre Dame was unable to capitalize as it scored just one field goal to take a 16-13 lead. The Irish finished the first half on a 22-11 run. Jeneka Joyce scored 14 of Notre Dame's 22 points in the run, as the Irish entered the halftime break with a 38-24 lead.
Notre Dame's lead quickly grew to 23 points (53-30) over the first 5:26 of the second half during a 15-6 run. The Irish held a lead of at least 20 points the remainder of the game. Notre Dame held its largest lead (32 points) at 81-49 with 50-seconds remaining in the game. Notre Dame out-rebounded Providence, 46-38
Providence College (4-18, 0-11) will return to action on Wednesday, February 18 against Rutgers in BIG EAST Conference action. The game is scheduled to be played at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. (7:30 p.m.).
