Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Maine, 4-2

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Maine, 4-2, on Saturday, February 7 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

After scoring first in their last seven games, Providence found itself down 1-0 at 3:04 of the first period as Meagan Aarts scored for Maine. Freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) evened the score 1:14 later at 1-1as she scored her seventh goal of the season. Senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) and junior Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) earned assists on the goal. The Black Bears continued to pressure the Friars as they generated several breakaways that were turned aside by senior goaltender Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.). Aarts was able to redirect the puck past Quinlan to score her second goal of the day at 9:30 of the first as Cheryl White and Tristan Desmet made consecutive tape-to-tape passes putting Maine ahead, 2-1.

Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) tied the game 6:16 into the second period from the edge of the crease as Maine goaltender Lara Smart was unable to control the loose puck. Zimmerman jammed the puck under Smart with Stephenson and fellow senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) each were awarded assists on the play. Halcisak and junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) put the game away for the Friars as they scored at 16:44 and 19:32 of the third period, respectively.

Providence outshot Maine, 50-16. Quinlan made 14 saves for the Friars as they improved to 9-11-2 overall on the season and 5-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Smart made 46 saves for the Black Bears as they fell to 8-11-3 overall and 5-5-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Sunday, February 8 as they host Maine at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
