Women's Ice Hockey Shutsout Maine, 5-0

The Providence College women's ice hockey team shutout the University of Maine, 5-0, on Sunday, February 8 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

The Black Bears came out strong in the first period as they outshot the Friars, 5-0, after four minutes of play. Junior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) stopped several point blank scoring chances and allowed Providence to get into the flow of the game. Senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 15:36 of the period. Roth was able to pounce on a rebound left by goaltender Lara Smart as she was unable to control a shot by senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba). Fellow senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) closed out the scoring in the period as she rifled a backhander top-shelf past Smart with 22 seconds remaining.

The Friars continued to press the Black Bears in the second period and put the game out of reach. Freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her eight and ninth goals of the season at 4:24 and 7:03 of the period. Junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) put the finishing touches on the game as she scored her sixth goal of the season at 14:08 of the period. Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) continued her strong play as she dominated in the face-off circle and assisted on three of the Friars' goals.

Providence was outshot by Maine, 22-20. Thomas made 22 saves for the Friars as they improved to 10-11-2 overall on the season and 6-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Smart made 15 saves for the Black Bears as they fell to 8-12-3 overall and 5-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on next weekend as they play a home-and-home series with HOCKEY EAST opponent Connecticut.
