Women's Ice Hockey Shutsout Northeastern, 6-0

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Northeastern, 6-0, on Saturday, March 6 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series.

The Friars came out flying as they got on the board twice in the first period. Junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored the game-winning goal at 14:23 of the first period as she fired the puck top shelf over the shoulder of Northeastern's Chanda Gunn. Sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) was able to redirect the puck through Gunn's five-hole just over four minutes later for the Friars' second goal. Providence put the game out of reach in the second period as junior Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.), senior Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Payton each added a goal to the Friar effort. Junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored a power play goal just 27 seconds into the third period to closeout the scoring. Senior Kelli Halcisak had a three assist day to increase her total points on the season to a team high, 41. Junior Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) earned an assist on the game-winning goal to extending her scoring streak to a career high seven games.

Providence outshot Northeastern, 46-12. Sophomore Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) earned her second shutout of the season, making 12 saves, as the Friars improved to 16-13-2 overall and 11-5-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Northeastern fell to 13-10-8 overall and 7-7-4 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Sunday, March 7 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to complete their home-and-home series with the Huskies at Matthews Arena at 2:00 p.m.
