PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.) scored at the 17:58 mark of the second period as the Providence College men's hockey team played to a 3-3 tie on Friday, January 14 at Schneider Arena.
In a game in which Northeastern never trailed, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead on the power play at 2:40 of the first period when Mike Morris collected a loose puck in the slot and fired a wrist shot past PC netminder Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas). The Friars responded with a power-play goal of their own at 5:09 as junior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) was able to tuck the puck into the empty net as he took advantage of a rebound in front. Sophomore Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Pa.) and Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) assisted on the goal.
The two teams each scored two goals in the second period to close out the scoring. Morris tallied his second goal of the night just 37 seconds in to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. The Friars again came back at 6:13 when sophomore Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) took a pass from senior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) and fired a one timer past Northeastern's Keni Gibson.
At 15:03, the Huskies regained their one goal lead as they took advantage of a five-on-three power play. Jason Guerriero scored his 10th goal of the season to give his team a 3-2 lead. That lead was short-lived as McCreary and line mate Tony Zancanaro (Howell, Mich.) skated in on a two-on-one break. Zancanaro made the pass to McCreary who fired a high wrist shot that glanced off the cross bar and bounced into the net.
The two teams had chances to score in the third period and overtime, but each respective goalie turned aside those chances. Sims finished with 37 saves, while Gibson stopped 30 shots.
The Friars and the Huskies return to action on Saturday, January 15 as the two teams will square off at Matthews Arena.
