PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown University men's hockey team scored a first period goal and never looked back en route to a 5-1 victory over Providence College in 19th Annual Mayor's Cup on January 22 at Meehan Auditorium.
The win marked Brown's first victory over Providence since November 4, 2000. Providence held the Mayor's Cup the previous three seasons with two victories and a tie last season. Providence leads the Mayor's Cup series (10-7-2), but Brown leads the overall series, 42-40-2.
The Bears took the lead at the 15:20 mark of the first period as Sean Hurley scored his second goal of the season after a scrum in front of the net. In the second period, Brown added to its lead with three goals for a 4-0 advantage after two periods. Joe Bauer scored Brown's second goal of the night as he collected a rebound and fired a wrist shot past PC goalie Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas) at 2:29. Mike Meech added to Brown's lead with his fifth goal of the season at 3:59, while Pete LeCain posted his first career goal at 11:27.
Providence had several chances to score, including a power-play chance early in the third period, but Colin McDonald's shot from in close hit the left post. However, the Friars broke D'Alba's shut out streak with 18 seconds remaining as senior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored on the power play. Junior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) and sophomore Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) assisted on the goal.
D'Alba recorded made 21 saves to earn his seventh win of the season. Senior Mike Wolfe (Milford, Conn.), who was making first appearance this season, came in the second period and stopped eight shots. Brown improved to 9-6-3, while the Friars fell to 6-14-3.
