PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Colgate, 4-1, on Sunday, October 23 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. With the win, Head Coach Bob Deraney earned his 125th career victory.
With only 34 seconds remaining in the first period, senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season on the power play. Defensemen junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) earned the assists on the play.
Both teams held strong defensively for the entire second period, as Providence held the one-goal advantage leading into the third period.
The Friar offense awoke at the 10-minute mark of the third period when junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) put the Friars up, 2-0, with a power play goal assisted by senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and freshman Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario). At 12:15, Watrous returned the favor with an assist to Thatcher on a short-handed goal. Thatcher ran down the puck on a bad Colgate pass at center ice. Thatcher scrambled her way past a Red Raider defender and slapped the puck into the chest of Colgate netminder Brook Wheeler. Watrous rebounded the miss with a shot of her own that was also saved by Wheeler. Although haulting back-to-back Friar shots, Wheeler wasn't able to stop the rebound shot by Thatcher in the scramble that put Providence up, 3-0.
At 17:43, Colgate responded with a power play goal by Ruth Fish, assisted by Allison Paiano and Tara French. Less than a minute later, senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) ended the game the way she started, with her second goal of the game. Sophomore Kelli Doolin was credited with the assist on the play.
Wheeler recorded a game-high 34 saves, while senior Jana Bugden posted 31 saves in her first win between the pipes since a 3-0 win over New Hampshire in the 2004 HOCKEY EAST Championship game on March 21.
Providence will hit the road against Northeastern on Saturday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
