PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team claimed first-place in HOCKEY EAST standings with a 6-1 win over Vermont on Thursday, November 17 at PC's Schneider Arena. All Friar classes were represented with a goal in the victory.

Sophomore Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) scored the lone goal in the first period that put Providence on the board first at 16:12, assisted by senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) and junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.). At 3:47 of the second period, the Catamounts tied the game, 1-1, with a power play goal by Jenny Hogan. Kattie Anderson and Abbey Kaknes assisted on the play. However, the Friars never looked back when freshman Katey Beach (Middlebury Heights, Ohio) netted her first career game-winner at 11:44 of the second period with assists from Laffin and sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario).

Providence went on to score four more goals in the third period to solidify the win. At 2:44, Gigliotti scored her fifth goal of the season with assists from senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.). Less than two minutes later freshman Erin Normore netted her second goal of the season and first on the power play with assists from Doolin and sophomore Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.). Thatcher and Payton assisted Watrous with her sixth goal of the season at 5:33. The Friars ended the game, 6-1, when Watrous returned the favor to Payton who scored her fourth goal of the season.

Freshman Stacey Scott earned her first collegiate decision in her first start of the season between the pipes. Scott posted 31 saves, while the Catamounts' Jenilee Roy recorded 24 saves in 45:39 minutes of action. Katie Nichols replaced Roy and recorded three saves.

PC went one-for-three on the power play and five-for-six on the penalty kill. The Friars edged Vermont in shots, 33-32. The Friars continue HOCKEY EAST play when they host Boston University at Schneider Arena on Saturday, November 19 at 2:00.
