POTSDAM, N.Y. (November 6, 2005). -- The No. 8 Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by Clarkson University, 4-2, at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y. The Friars fall to 3-3-1 overall on the season.
In the first period of play, both teams battled back-and-forth defensively and did not allow any goals. Providence posted eight shots on goal, while Clarkson recorded seven to end the first period.
Clarkson got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Micheleen Devine in the second period, assisted by Katie Morrison. The Golden Knights went up 2-0, when Ashley Shaidle assisted Marie-Jo Gaudet for a goal at 11:04.
Senior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) put the Friars on the board with her third goal of the season at 13:46. Senior goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) passed the puck to junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) on a two-on-one break-away play with Payton. Watrous passed the puck to Payton in between the face-off circles for her third goal of the season. Watrous earned her fourth assist on the season, while Bugden posted her first collegiate assist.
The Golden Knights increased their lead 3-1 at 2:15 of the third period, with a goal by Brooke Beazer. She was assisted by Kimberly McKenney and Katie Morrison. At 3:55, Providence made a push with a short-handed goal by senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) that was assisted by junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.).
Clarkson ended the game with a goal at 19:03 by Emma Madigan. Christine Bailkowski and Shaidle assisted on the play.
The Friars were out shot by Clarkson, 26-18. Providence (0-3) and Clarkson (0-2) were unable to convert on the power play.
The Friars will begin a seven-game home stand beginning with the Black Bears of Maine on Saturday and Sunday, November 12-13 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Providence exploded offensively as four Friars had three or more points in the victory.
