BOSTON, Mass. (December 3, 2005) --The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by Boston University for the first time ever, 2-1, at Walter Brown Arena in Boston, Mass. With the loss, the Friars fall to 8-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.

At 7:08 of the first period, senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) notched her eighth goal of season with a power play goal assisted by junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.). Providence killed a penalty to open up the second period that led to an eventual Terrier goal in the second period.. At 13:50, the Terriers tied the contest, 1-1, with a goal at 13:50 by Gina Kearns with the assist from Cara Hendry.

At 10:23 of the third period, freshman Nicki Wiart scored her first career short-hander on what proved to be her first career game-winner. Hendry passed the puck to Wiart on a two-on-one breakaway. Hendry maneuvered by the Friar defense and put the puck in the net past Friar netminder Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) for the goal.

The Friars outshot the Terriers, 26-23. Providence went one-for-six on the power play and killed all five penalties.

Bugden made 21 saves in the net for the Friars, while Allyse Wilcox recorded 25 saves. The Friars will continue conference play in Massachusetts when they face Boston College on Sunday, December 4 at Kelly Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass at 2:00 p.m.
