Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston College, 4-2. With the win, the Friars improve to 9-5-2 overall with a 6-2-1 HOCKEY EAST mark on the season.
Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) put the Friars on the board with an unassisted goal at 12:09 of the first period. The Eagles deflected the puck directly in front of the net where Watrous swooped in for the rebound goal. Watrous struck again with her 10th goal on the season at 11:03 of the second period. Freshman Erin Normore (Ontario, Canada) shot the puck from the left face-off circle, where Watrous picked up the rebound for her second goal of the night. At 6:59, sophomore Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season, which proved to be her first career game-winner. Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and sophomore Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) assisted on the play.
In the third period, senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) capped the Friar offense with a power play goal at 1:39. Sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) passed the puck to Normore who passed it to Laffin for a one-timer two feet away from the goal line above the left face-off circle. Only 14 seconds later (1:25), the Eagles got on the board with an unassisted goal by freshman Becky Zavisza. At 18:25 of the third period, the Eagles narrowed the lead, 4-2, with an unassisted power play goal by Maggie Taverna. Providence held strong defensively and did not allow any more goals in the game.
Providence outshot Boston College, 34-15, including a 20-5 shot dominance in the second period. The Friars went two-for-five on the power play, and killed four of five penalties.
Senior netminder Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) posted 13 saves in the win, while Johanna Ellison recorded 24 in the net for the Eagles. Ellison was replaced by Alison Quandt in the third period who posted six saves in 19:33 minutes of play.
The Friars are scheduled to host their last home game of 2005 against Dartmouth College on Saturday, December 10 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
