PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- After an exciting 2-1 victory over intrastate rival Rhode Island on Wednesday, August 30, the Providence women's soccer team looks to maintain that momentum when it hosts Fairfield on Friday, September 1, at 4:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field. The Friars, 1-0-1 on the season, will be seeking to remain undefeated, while the Stags (0-2) will be in search of their first win.
In the victory over URI on Wednesday, sophomore Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied with less than five minutes remaining to lift PC to the win in its 2006 home opener. Mancarella blasted a header into the top right corner after receiving a perfect service on a corner kick from classmate Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.). Gent had tallied earlier in the game to give the Friars the early 1-0 lead off an assist from freshman Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.). For the game, PC outshot URI, 11-10, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half. In goal, Providence junior Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) made six saves.
The Stags opened the season with a pair of losses at the UConn Classic. Fairfield dropped its opener to Maine, 2-1, on August 25, and then fell to Hofstra, 3-0, on August 27. Fairfield was scheduled to have played its home opener against Holy Cross on August 29, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather. At the UConn Classic against Maine, freshman Casey Frobey netted the lone goal for the Stags. Brett Maron made seven saves in the losing effort. The game against defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra was not as close as the Pride jumped out to a quick lead just 4:10 into the game and was up 2-0 at the half. Hofstra increased its lead to 3-0 just 2:49 into the second half. Maron played 70:46 for the the Stags and recorded two saves and Katie Ely came in for the final 19:14, but did not register a save.
The teams have only met twice before and the series is deadlocked at 1-1. Providence won the initial meeting, a 3-1 victory on September 24, 1995, but the Stags came back the following year and defeated the Friars, 4-2, on September 5, 1996. In each game, the visiting team has come out victorious.
