Women's Hoops Falls To DePaul, 87-64

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to DePaul, 87-64, in BIG EAST Conference action at McGrath Arena in Chicago, Ill. on January 17, 2009. Senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) recorded a team-high 15 points for Providence and surpassed the 1,000-point career milestone. Natasha Williams led all scorers with 21 points for DePaul, while Keisha Hampton contributed a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds.

In the first half, the Friars trailed by as many as 22 points (33-11) with 7:14 remaining. Providence responded by outscoring the Blue Demons, 18-10, to close the half. DePaul held a 43-29 lead at the break. Eight players cracked the scoring column in the balanced first-half offense for DePaul. Natasha Williams went into the locker room with nine points for the Blue Demons, while senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) recorded 13 of the Friars' 29 points.

In the second half, DePaul outscored the Friars by nine (44-35) en route to the 87-64 victory. The Blue Demons were red hot from the field for the game, shooting 50.8-percent (32-63). The Friars connected on just 22-of-65 attempts from the floor in the contest (33.8-percent).

The Friars failed to outrebound their opponent for the first time this season during BIG EAST play. The Blue Demons held a 45-38 advantage on the boards, despite a game-high 12 rebounds from Providence's Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.). Darrian increased her career rebounding total to 590 boards and moved into 16th place all-time in program history. Darrian also added eight points and two assists.

Marandola became the 29th Friar all-time to score 1,000 points and now ranks 27th all-time in scoring at Providence with 1,008 points in just 72 career games.

Joining Marandola in double figures vs. the Blue Demons was sophomore Trinity Hull (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio). Hull added 12 points, while Bove chipped in 11.

Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.), who entered the contest on a four-game double-digit scoring streak finished the night with three points and three rebounds, but dished a season-high five assists from the forward position.

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, January 20 against USF. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
