PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by No. 11 Harvard, 2-1, on Tuesday, October 20 in a non-conference match at Glay Field. Andre Akpan converted a penalty kick with 14 seconds left in the second half to lead the Crimson to victory.
The game was scoreless for nearly 88 minutes with Providence holding a 9-5 shot advantage. However, there was plenty of action in the last 2:09 as three goals were scored to decide the match. The Crimson (10-2-1) struck first at the 87:51 mark as Desmond Mitchell scored his third goal of the season. Mitchell, who had entered the match three minutes before, took a cross from Adam Rousmaniere and tapped the ball into the net with his right foot from five yards out. Providence (5-6-3) responded with 27 seconds left when freshman Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) tallied his first collegiate goal. Sophomore John Raley (St. Inigoes, Md.) drove the ball into the 18-yard box and it found Cintron who was able to re-direct the ball with his right foot from five yards out and into the net.
However, just 13 seconds later, the Friars were whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box which resulted in a penalty kick. Akpan placed the ball into the low right corner of the net with 14 seconds left in the match and seal the win for the Crimson.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 23 when they host Marquette in a BIG EAST Conference match at Glay Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
