Friar Volleyball Falls To UMBC In Four Sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a four-set match to UMBC (15-25, 25-21, 15-25, 12-25) on Sunday afternoon America East action at Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence. The Friars fall to 9-16 on the season, 1-4 in league play, while UMBC improves to 8-12, 4-2 in the conference.

Providence was led by junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.), who notched 10 kills while also adding six digs. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) each added eight kills. Morris also recorded 11 digs.

The top defender for Providence was sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who picked up 23 digs. Freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) continued to show her versatility, picking up nine digs and two blocks. Friar setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) Recorded 31 assists on the afternoon, in addition to seven digs.

The Retrievers were led by Sabrina Hoeks, who notched 16 kills. Three other Retrievers reached the double-digit kill mark, as Iman Kennedy picked up 11 kills and Hallie Carter and Ali Goc each posted 10 kills. Carter and Goc both recorded double-doubles, with 15 and 14 digs, respectively. UMBC setter Alexandria Spaay had a phenomenal afternoon, picking up 50 assists.

The Retrievers took the first set 25-15 while hitting at a .323 clip, powered by five kills each by Kennedy and Hoeks. The Friars rebounded in the second set, hitting at a .342 clip that was powered by six kills from Morris and four each from Dolan and Fletcher. Fletcher also added four blocks. After the intermission, UMBC took control, as the Providence attack just could not get flowing. The final two stanzas saw the Friars only record 10 kills, compared to 30 for the Retrievers.

The Friars will look to rebound on Wednesday, October 20, when they take on intrastate rival Bryant in Smithfield, R.I. The return to league play next weekend, for a home-and-home series with New Hampshire, as the Wildcats visit Mullaney Gymnasium on Friday, October 22, while Providence travels to Durham, N.H. on Sunday, October 24.
