PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team notched its first win as a member of the America East Conference, taking down Hartford in straight-sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-18). The Friars improve to 8-12 on the season, 1-1 in league play. The Hawks fall to 5-14, 0-2 in the conference.
The Friars were led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched 13 kills while hitting at a .310 clip. Classmates Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) also had solid days swinging, picking up 10 and seven kills, respectively. Another junior, setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), had an impressive afternoon, picking up 31 assists while adding seven digs. Sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the defense, recording 11 digs while also notching three service aces.
Hartford was led by Kami Nethersole, who picked up 11 kills. Setter Lindsay Ford recorded 24 assists, while also leading the back row with 10 digs.
The first set looked like it might go beyond 25 points, as it featured nine ties and five lead changes. The Friars were led in the set by Fletcher's five kills and Hendel's four. Late in the set, with Providence trailing 17-18, a ball handling error forced Friar Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson to take a timeout. Her squad responded behind the service game of Muzzonigro. After back-to-back Hawk errors tied the match at 19, a Fletcher kill and consecutive kills by Hendel were followed by a Muzzonigro ace to put Providence up 23-19. They would seal the set, 25-20, on a kill by Fletcher.
The second set would end with the same 25-20 final score, but this time there was only one lead change. After Hartford built a 15-10 lead, the Friars responded to another timeout by Royer-Johnson. After trading a few points, Muzzonigro came to the service line with Providence down 18-14. By the time she was done, the Friars had forced the set's only lead change by taking seven-straight points, good for a 21-18 lead. Providence then held on to take the set, 25-20, again winning it on a Fletcher kill.
The third set was also tight through most of the frame, featuring 10 ties. As usual, it was a junior leading the way, but this time it was Dolan, not Fletcher, who led the squad with four kills in the set. The final tie in the set came at 17-17, when it was again the service game of Muzzonigro taking the Friars on a run. This time five-straight points, including two service aces, to put her squad up 24-17. The Friars sealed the set with another Fletcher kill, taking the frame 25-18.
Providence returns to the court on Tuesday, October 5, when they host in-state rival Rhode Island. The match starts 7:00 p.m. at Mullaney Gymnasium.
