Women's Basketball Promotes Jonath Nicholas To Associate Head Coach

Providence College Head Women's Basketball Coach Phil Seymore announced today (August 12) that he has promoted Jonath Nicholas to associate head coach. Nicholas has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Friars, who are coming off of their best season since 1991-92. Prior to his arrival at Providence, Nicholas spent four seasons as an assistant at BIG EAST foe St. John's and two years at UAB.
"Upon his arrival at Providence, Jonath brought a wealth of experience to our program," Coach Seymore said. "He is a tireless worker who has brought our recruiting efforts to another level. His connections on the East Coast and abroad have proven to be invaluable. The addition of his coaching demeanor and acumen, he gives our program great balance. I am proud to award this associate head coaching position to someone I trust, and who I would trust to head this program."
In addition to his time at Providence, St. John's and UAB, Nicholas also served as Associate Head Coach at Southwestern Community College in San Diego, Calif. from 1988-99. While at SCC, he helped develop 10 Junior College All-Americans and 16 student-athletes who went on to play NCAA Division I basketball.
Nicholas is best known in the women's basketball circles as a tireless recruiter. He has teamed with the rest of the Providence staff to bring in an impressive group of talent. Heading into the 2010-11 campaign, the Friars have the sixth-best recruiting class in the BIG EAST Conference and 29th-best class overall, according to the All-Star Girls' Report.
Providence will look to build on its success from a season ago, as the squad advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Friars posted a 3-1 record in the tournament, earning victories over Boston University (64-58), Old Dominion (76-61) and Maryland (77-64). The Friars fell to eventual runner-up Miami (73-65). Providence's three victories in the WNIT marked the most victories for the program in a single post-season tournament. It also marked the Friars' first post-season tournament appearance since 1991-92.
Providence will open the 2010-11 season at Saint Joseph's (Pa.) on Friday, November 12 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Friars will host UMass in their home-opener on Sunday, November 14 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
