PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Iona College, 4-0, on Friday, August 27 in its home season-opener. Graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) had one goal and two assists, sophomore Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) notched two goals and freshman Stephanie Leonard (Framingham, Mass.) scored one goal.
Camburn scored her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute after she received a rebound off a blocked shot. Camburn took the ball and tucked it away in the bottom right corner of the net.
The Friars came out of the gate with some early attempts with two early shots by senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) that were saved by Iona goalkeeper Jacquelyn Gates (Smithtown, N.Y.). Junior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) had another good scoring opportunity when she took the ball and dribbled from half, but Gates saved the shot from point blank range. With seven minutes remaining in the half, the Friars were on the offense again when Webster laid the ball off to Stephanie Leonard who had a clear path to net, but was caught by a defender.
Iona had two opportunites in the first half. The first opportunity came in the 17th minute when Iona's Lisa Murer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) took a shot from the 18 yard-box, but Providence senior goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) made a great diving save to her left. In the 32nd minute, Iona's Lauren Machtel (West Babylon) was headed towards goal, but Providence's sophomore Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) was able to catch up with the play and shield the ball out of bounds.
In the second half, the Friars would capitalize more on their opportunities. In the 56th minute, Webster received a pass from Camburn at the top of the 18 yard-box and buried it into the right side of the net. Webster would score again in the 69th minute when she received a pass from Camburn at the top of the six yard-box. She ripped a shot that deflected off the left post and into the back of the goal. Providence's final goal would come in the 87th minute when Leonard beat a player to her right and rocketed a shot to the right side netting of the goal.
The Friar backline was solid behind the play of Roncarati, only giving up two shots on goal. The Friars finished with a 30-5 shot advantage, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal and have yet to give up a goal thus far in the season.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, August 29 when they host American University at 1:00 p.m. on Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
