The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released it's national rankings today (September 14) with both Friar cross country teams represented. The Providence women currently rank 14th in the country with 188 points. The men are 20th with 129 points.
Both teams are coming off strong showings in their respective season-opening races on September 11. The women placed first out of ten teams in the Blue Devil Invitational, an annual meet held in New Britain, Conn. and hosted by Central Connecticut State University. The Friars captured four of the top six spots en route to a 25-point team total. Junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) emerged from the field of 133 runners first, completing the five-kilometer course in 17:31. Other scorers included sophomore Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.; 2nd, 17:43), junior Rebecca Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland; 4th place, 18:07), senior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.; 6th, 18:11) and junior Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.; 11th 18:28).
The men also competed in the Blue Devil Invitational, placing first out of nine teams with 30 points. The Friars took the first three spots in the 102-man field. Junior Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) led from wire to wire, winning individual honors with a time of 25:31. Sophomore Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.; 2nd, 25:48), freshman Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.; 3rd, 26:24), junior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.; 11th, 27:01) and freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand; 13th, 27:04) rounded out the scoring.
The women will next compete at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. on September 25. The men are off until October 2, when they run in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wisc.
