WORCESTER, Mass. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a five-set match (26-24, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 11-15) to Holy Cross on Wednesday, August 31 at the Holy Cross Field House. The Friars drop to 2-3 on the young season, while the Crusaders improve to 2-1.
The Friars were led by senior captain Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who recorded 15 kills, while adding seven blocks and an ace. Freshman Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) continued to contribute in the front and back rows, narrowly missing a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 28 assists, while sophomore Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) added 12 helpers. Sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) again led the PC defense with 19 digs.
Holy Cross was led by a double-double effort from Megan Lynch, who picked up 19 kills and 15 assists. Kathleen Colpoys added 11 kills. Setter Hannah Grace Stokes had an impressive game, racking up 43 assists. Elizabeth Watters led the Crusader back row with 21 digs.
The Friars took a dramatic first set, 26-24. Freshman Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) was came up big in the clutch, notching a kill to put the Friars up, 25-24, before assisting on Lauren Hendel's (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) set-clinching kill. The Crusaders took a just-as-close second set, 25-23. Neither team led by more than four points in the second frame.
The squads then took turns controlling sets. Providence took a 25-12 win in the third set, powered by five kills from Fletcher. The Crusaders then picked up a 25-13 win in the fourth set, behind five kills from Lynch and four from Colpoys.
The fifth and deciding set saw Holy Cross jump out to an 11-5 lead before holding on for a 15-11 win to take the match.
The Friars return to action on Friday, September 2, when they take on Memphis at the University of San Francisco asics/Powerade Challenge. First serve against the Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. ET. They follow that match up with two more on Saturday, September 3, taking on the host USF Dons (1:30 p.m. ET) and Columbia (8:00 p.m. ET).
