Friar Volleyball Drops First Match At San Francisco Challenge

San Francisco, Calif. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its opening match of the USF asics/Powerade Challenge in San Francisco, Calif., falling to Memphis, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17). The Friars fall to 2-4, while the Tigers improve to 5-0.

Senior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) each notched seven kills for Providence. Senior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 18 assists, while junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the squad with 10 digs.

The Tigers were led by Maja Kostic and Marija Jovanovic, who each recorded 11 kills. Aleksandra Petronijevic led the Tigers with 34 assists, while Alexis Welse added 11 digs.

The Tigers picked up the first set, 25-18, while out-hitting the Friars .212-.028. The Friars picked-up the offense in the next two sets, hitting .241 in each, but were unable to overcome a Memphis offense that hit .386 for the match. The Tigers took sets two and three by scores of 25-19 and 25-17, respectively.

The Friars return to action at the USF asics/Powerade Challenge on Saturday, September 3. They face the host Dons at 1:30 p.m. ET, before facing Columbia at 8:00 p.m. ET.
