PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College volleyball team concluded the Eighth Annual Friar Classic by splitting a pair of matches at Alumni Hall on Saturday, September 10. The Friars swept Coppin State (25-15, 28-26, 25-12) before falling to Lafayette in straight sets (20-25, 17-25, 12-25). The Friars now stand at 4-8 on the 2011 campaign.
The Coppin State match saw senior middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) continue her impressive play, nothing 15 kills while hitting .417. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) was superb running the offense, recording 31 assits, while junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) anchored the back row with 22 digs. Senior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and freshman Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) each added seven kills against the Eagles.
Coppin State got seven kills from Ariel Richard, as well as six each from Christina Epps and Vanity Massey. Setter Kristine Bindule recorded 23 assists, while libero Gabrielle Otero led the defense with nine digs.
As sharp as the Friar offense was against the Eagles, they just could not get in sync against Lafayette. The Leopards held Fletcher to just eight kills, while senior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added seven. Providence hit just .049 as a team, stymied by a Lafayette front row that recorded 11 blocks in the match. Morrison recorded 23 assists, while Muzzonigro added 14 digs. Fletcher and Muzzonigro were named to the All-Tournament Team for their work during the weekend.
Lafayette was led by Camissa Beghou and Kaitlynn Zoller, who recorded nine and eight kills, respectively. Setter Sarah Frohnapfel recorded 26 assists. The back row saw Christy Mebust pick up 14 digs, while Alexandra Russo added 13 digs. Beghou and Mebust earned spots on the All-Tournament Team, while Zoller was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The Leopards posted a 3-0 record in the tournament to win the title. Providence finished 2-1, Coppin State 1-2 and St. Francis (N.Y.) 0-3.
The Friars return to action on Friday, September 16, when they face Dartmouth in the Dartmouth Invidiational. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. The Friars will then face Delaware State and Central Connecticut State on Saturday, September 17, in Hanover, N.H.
