Providence was edged in the first set, 25-21. Rose led the Friars in the stanza with five kills. Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) reached double-digit assists with 10. Sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded six digs in the set.
St. John's followed by winning the second set, 25-16, to take a 2-0 match advantage. Rose again led the Friars with kills, this time recording three.
In the third set, Providence trailed by one (14-13) before the Red Storm went on a 10-0 run en route to their 25-14 set win. Sophomores Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) each had four kills in the set.
Wiesler had a team-high 26 assists while Cruz ended the match with 17 digs.
St. John's was led by Aleksandra Wachowicz and Karin Palgutova who each had 10 kills. Shawna-Lei Santos registered a match-best 35 assists while Morgan Thomas tallied 19 digs.
The Friars next play when they host a BIG EAST home series on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 at Alumni Hall. Providence will face off against Xavier of Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Butler on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
