Xavier jumped out to a quick lead with a 25-16 first set win. Fitzgerald posted four kills in the stanza while junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had seven assists.
The second set saw a back-and-forth battle as there were six tie scores and three lead changes. Providence held its first lead of the set at 17-16, but the Musketeers were able to narrowly win the set, 25-23, and take a 2-0 match advantage. Fitzgerald again tallied four kills. Wiseler added nine assists while Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) tallied nine digs.
Xavier won the third set, 25-15, to win the match. Fitzgerald closed out the match with four kills in the third set.
Overall, Fitzgerald ended with 12 kills while Wiesler registered a match-high 24 assists. Cruz and Fitzgerald reached double-digits in digs at 15 and 12, respectively.
The Musketeers were led by Kristen Massa who had 12 kills. Aubree Smith had a team-best 20 assists and Jesse Earl added 16 digs.
"We had some good effort and offense at points," said Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson. "We are looking to improve upon that tomorrow."
The Friars play again tomorrow (Oct. 11) at Alumni Hall against Butler for a 5:00 p.m. match.
