Maine scored in the opening period when Hailey Browne tallied a power-play goal 48 seconds into the stanza to give the Black Bears an early advantage at 1-0. Audra Richards and Jillian Langtry assisted on the play.
Maine added another goal 5:03 into the second period when Jennifer More scored to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead. Emilie Brigham and Brooke Stacey assisted on the play. Senior Victoria Virtue (Walpole, Mass.) was awarded a penalty shot midway through the period but was stopped by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy. Soon after senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) scored in the midst of a battle with defenders in front of the net to help PC pull within one of the Black Bears (2-1). Virtue and sophomore Liv Halvorson (Richfield, Minn.) gathered the assists on the play.
The Black Bears added to their lead while having a 5-on-3 advantage in the third period (9:51), to bring the score to, 3-1. More notched her second goal of the game while the assist went to Richards. With the goalie pulled, senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) scored (19:17) short range to pull PC closer to Maine, 3-2. The assists went to Halvorson and junior Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.). Providence was unable to net the equalizer with an extra skater for the remainder of regulation.
For the game, junior netminder Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) made 35 saves while Treacy turned away 29 shots.
Providence received eight penalties in the game while Maine had four penalties.
The Friars look to split the series tomorrow at Maine with the puck drop set for 1:00 p.m.
