Providence opened up the match by edging DePaul in the first set, 25-23. Sophomore Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) tallied four kills in the stanza. The set saw 14 ties and five lead changes.
After the Blue Demons knotted the match (1-1) by winning the second set (25-16), the Friars again took a match lead by winning the third set, 25-19. Johnson and senior Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) each recorded four kills in the set. Sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) contributed eight digs.
DePaul again came back to tie the match (2-2) by winning the fourth set, 25-21. Johnson registered six kills in the set. Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) added 15 assists.
After the score was tied 4-4 in the fifth set, the Friars never looked back and held the lead the rest of the set en route to their victory. Johnson and McCollom each had three kills. Providence posted its highest hitting percentage in the match at .417.
Overall, Wiesler finished with 54 assists while McCollom ended with nine kills. Cruz recorded 19 kills and senior Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) also reached double figures in digs with 10.
Three Blue Demons finished with double digit kills with Callie Huebener leading the group with 15. Colleen Smith had a team-best 52 assists while Lexi Chanos tallied 16 kills.
The Friars play again tomorrow (Nov. 8) at Marquette for a 6:00 p.m. match.
