PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall University on Sunday, Oct. 23, 1-0. The Friars improve to 11-5-2 on the season and improve their BIG EAST record to 5-2-1. The Pirates move to 5-10-1 overall and 1-7-0 in BIG EAST competition.
During the first half, the Friars tested sophomore goalkeeper Anna MacLean with difficult shots from Jill Clapp (Marshfield, Mass.), Juliana Pellegrini (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.).
Madison Doherty (Peabody, Mass.) put the Friars on the board in the 38th minute. The junior notched her first goal of the season and was assisted on the goal by senior Hannah Wear (South Salem, N.Y.).
At the half the Friars led in shots 10-5. Senior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) recorded four saves to MacLean's three.
The second half remained scoreless as the Friars posted seven shots to Seton Hall's three. Shea notched her 25th shutout of her career, recording a total of four saves against the Pirates. MacLean recorded seven saves on the game.
Coach Lopes stated after the game, "Extremely happy for the team and our seniors. It's a group that is giving everything to the program while developing into extraordinary women. I am also pleased with the entire team. They worked hard defensively, earned another shutout and had good ideas on attack. We were deserving of a couple more goals but we lacked some composure."
The Friars will return to action for their final regular season BIG EAST match on Friday, Oct. 28 against St. John's University in Queens, N.Y.
