PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team fell to Butler (19-25, 25-23, 12-25, 17-25) in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Nov. 6. With the setback Providence falls to 13-17 overall and 1-13 in the Big East while Butler improves to 17-13 on the year with a 5-9 mark in league play.

Butler came out strong in the first set and held an 8-2 advantage after a service ace by junior setter Makayla Ferguson to force a Providence timeout. Providence closed the gap to just two points several times in the set, but couldn't get any closer as Butler pulled away down the stretch for the 25-19 win and the 1-0 advantage in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Beck led the way for Butler with six kills and two digs. Freshman outside hitter Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) paced Providence with five kills and a dig in the set.

The second set again had the visiting Bulldogs race out to the early advantage and had the 7-1 lead three straight kills by sophomore Bri Lilly, forcing the Friars into a timeout. Providence responded, however, and took its first lead of the set when block assists by senior middle blocker Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) and junior setter Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) put the Friars up 13-12. The Friars had been down by six points but went on to score eight straight points to take the lead. Providence led by as many as four points late in the set before taking the 25-23 win in the set to even the match at 1-1. Senior outside hitter Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) notched four kills, four digs and a set while Alderson had three kills and three digs in the win for the Friars. Lilly led the way for the visiting Bulldogs with six kills, one dig and one block in the set.

Butler controlled the action in the opening stages of the third set and held the 8-2 lead after a kill by Beck. The Bulldogs led 16-7 on a kill by Lilly and cruised to the 25-12 win in the set, capped by a kill from Beck to take a 2-1 lead for the match. Alderson led the way for the Friars with four kills.

The fourth set once again saw Butler take control early and had the 7-2 lead after a service ace by sophomore libero Taylor Takeda. Butler led by as many as eight points late in the set before taking the 25-17 win on a kill by Lilly, giving the Bulldogs the 3-1 victory in the contest.

Alderson paced Providence in the match with 13 kills and five digs while Clark notched 35 assists and 10 digs for the Friars. Fitzgerald also tallied a double-double, recording 10 kills and 14 digs.

Logan led the way for Butler with 20 kills and 15 digs while Beck notched a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs in the victory. Ferguson tallied 51 assists, nine digs, four kills and two blocks while Takeda had a team-best 16 digs for the Bulldogs.

In upcoming action, Providence will travel to Creighton on Friday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. while Butler travels to Georgetown on Saturday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m.
