Women's Hockey Prepares For Home-And-Home With Boston College

Puck Drop
Providence will travel to Boston College to open up the home-and-home series on Jan. 24 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. puck drop the following day in Providence, R.I.

Climbing The Standings
Providence entered last weekend sitting at sixth place in the Hockey East before sweeping the University of New Hampshire in two road matchups. The Friars jumped to fourth in Hockey East behind Northeastern, Boston University and Boston College after wnning nine of their last 12 games.

The Friars defeated the Wildcats in game one, 3-1, on goals from Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden), Ciara Barone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.). In game two, Hjalmarsson tallied another early goal before Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:15 remaining while the game was deadlocked at 1-1.

Abstreiter Earns Defensive Player Of The Week Honors
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) stopped 64 of 66 shots over the weekend, earning her Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors. She posted a .970 save percentage, including a 1.00 goals against average in two games against New Hampshire. Abstreiter recorded a career-high 32 saves on Friday, Jan. 17 before matching the feat the following day with another 32 saves.

Abstreiter took over in net on Jan. 4 against Vermont and has started every game since between the pipes. She holds a 4-1 record over her last five starts and has allowed just one goal in four of the last five matchups.

Road Stretch
The Friars have played six of their last seven games on the road, posting a 4-2 record in those contests. Prior to the series sweep at UNH, Providence split its home-and-home series with No. 8 Boston University.

Providence vs. Ranked Opponents
Providence now holds a 2-3 record against ranked opponents this season, including a 2-1 record at Schneider Arena.

Dove And Hjalmarsson Leading The Way
Sophomore Sara Hjalmarsson leads the offensive charge, recording a team-high 13 goals alongside nine assists for 22 points. She ranks fifth in the Hockey East in goals (13) and is tied for ninth in points (22).

Captain Whitney Dove ranks second on the team in points (20), with six goals and a team-high 14 assists. She ranks tied for eighth in Hockey East in assists.

Earlier this season against the Eagles
The Friars and Eagles met earlier this season (Nov. 2) at Conte Forum. BC prevailed, 5-2, on goals from five different players. Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied both of the Friars' goals. Clare Minnerath played the opening 30:12, allowing five goals and making 10 saves. Abstreiter took over in net, stopping all 15 shots over the final 29:48 of regulation.

Providence In The Polls
January 6 marked the third time this season that Providence has received votes in the USCHO Women's Poll. The Friars received four votes on January 6.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 13-9-2 overall and 10-7-0 in Hockey East play. Providence ranks 12th in the nation in scoring defense.

Hjalmarsson leads the Friars in points with 22 on 13 goals and nine assists. Dove holds a team-high 14 assists while adding six goals. Hayley Lunny ranks third on the team in points with 15, while freshman Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) trails Lunny with 13 points.

Katrina Broccoli (North Haven, Conn.), Minnerath and Sandra Abstreiter have all seen time in net for the Friars, with Abstreiter getting her first action against Holy Cross (Nov. 1). Minnerath has sixteen starts, a 2.21 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. Abstreiter posted her first shutout of the season against the Crusaders with 26 saves. She has ten appearances on the season with a 1.66 goals against average and .939 save percentage.

Spreading The Wealth
Seventeen Friars have tallied a point this season with 15 players recording a goal. Eight players have reached double digits in Hjalmarsson (22), Dove (20), Lunny (15), DeBlois (13), Fransoo (12), Murphy (11), Rickard (11), Burton (11).

Four-Game Win Streak
The Friars held a season long winning streak of four games spanning from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30. Providence won 3-2 on home ice to begin the winning streak before defeating Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.

Providence then defeated Brown in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup, 10-0. The ten goals marked the most goals scored by a team in the Mayor's Cup history and first time the Friars have scored ten goals since Feb. 4, 2007, when they defeated Vermont, 10-1.

Hjalmarsson's Career Day
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) posted a career day against the Brown Bears, scoring three goals to go along with three assists. Her six points are the most by a player in the 25 years of the Mayor's Cup, and the most points scored by a women's player in a game this season in the NCAA.

She was named the Hockey East Player of the Week for her efforts. Hjalmarsson trails Dove for the team lead in points with 19 compared to Dove's 20.

Minnerath Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Minnerath was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28. It marked her first league honor as a Friar. The senior netminder made a career-high 33 saves en route to her first shutout of the season against No. 3 Northeastern (Oct. 25). She posted a 1-1-0 that last week and made a total of 53 saves in two starts.

Burton Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Burton scored a goal in each of her first two collegiate games, including the game winner against Quinnipiac (Oct. 5). For her efforts, she was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7. Burton's two goals came on just two total shots over that weekend.

Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Thursday, Sept. 26. Providence received 56 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (81), Boston University (71) and Boston College (65).

Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (42), UConn (41), Merrimack (30), Maine (29), Vermont (25), and Holy Cross (nine).

Hjalmarsson with Team Sweden
During the off-season, Sara Hjalmarsson had several chances to compete for Team Sweden. She was named to Sweden's National Team roster for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. She played four games for Team Sweden without tallying a point.

2018-19 Award Winners
The team had four players pick up Hockey East post-season honors. Murphy earned Second Team All-Star status for the second-consecutive season. Myers and Fransoo were named All-Star Honorable Mentions, marking each of their first-career league honors. Additionally, Sara Hjalmarsson was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Five different Friars earned Hockey East Weekly honors over the course of the season. Myers was named Defensive Player of the Week twice (Nov. 12, Mar. 4). Christina Putigna (Nov. 5), Maureen Murphy (Nov. 19) and Hayley Lunny (Nov. 26) each earned Player of the Week honors.  Sara Hjalmarsson was named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 16.

Murphy and Myers were also recognized with monthly awards from the league. Myers was Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in November and February. Murphy was Hockey East Player of the Month in November.

Scouting Boston College
The Golden Eagles post a 12-9-3 record and 11-7-2 mark in the Hockey East. Boston College sits one spot ahead of the Friars in the conference standings with 24 points compared to the Friars' 20 points. The Golden Eagles most recently picked up a win and tie against the Vermont last weekend at home. Boston College won the opening game, 7-5, before tying the series finale, 2-2.

As a team, the Golden Eagles average 2.9 goals per game while giving up 2.7. The Golden Eagles convert on 16.3% of power play chances and kill off 81.0% of penalties.

Who to Watch
Boston College has nine players in double figures with 17 players tallying at least one point this season. Kelly Brown leads the Eagles with 29 points on 12 goals and 20 assists. Delany Belinskas posts a team-high 14 goals.

Maddy McArthur has started a team-high 19 games between the pipes, posting a 2.48 goals against average and .909 save percentage. Kelly Pickreign has started five of her eight appearances with a 3-2-0 record.
