No. 7 Women's Hockey Welcomes The Black Bears

Puck Drop
The seventh-ranked Providence College women's hockey team is slated to host the University of Maine Black Bears this weekend. Games are set for Friday, Dec. 18 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 19 at 4:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Schneider Arena.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 5-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in Hockey East play. Providence is currently in the midst of a five-game winning streak.
 
The Friars previously had two-consecutive weekend sweeps against Boston College and Holy Cross. In their last series against Holy Cross, Providence had a shutout game on night one in Worcester, Mass. and defeated the Crusaders again at home with a 4-1 win. Providence's Sara Hjalmarrson (Bankeryd, Sweden) and Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) stood out with two goals and two assists, respectively.
 
Going into only their seventh game of the season, Providence has fourteen different players in the line-up with at least a point. Thirteen different players have posted an assist, while ten platers have found the back of the net.
 
Senior Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) has started all six games in the net. She holds a .951 save percentage and 1.32 goals against average. The netminder has made 155 total saves this season.
 
USCHO Division I Women's Poll-Dec 7th & Dec 14th, 2020
The Friars are working their way up the rankings, slotting in at number eight in the USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings on Dec. 7, then rising to number seven in this past week rankings (Dec. 14).
 
The Newcomers
The Friars welcome in eight new members to the program for the 2020-21 season - Maddy CoeneLindsay BochnaKC BrooksChloe McNeilBrooke BeckerClaire Tyo and Mireille Kingsley. Providence also welcomes in Hunter Barnett, a junior who spent the previous two seasons at RIT.
 
Scouting the Black Bears
The Black Bears enter the game with a 3-1-0 overall record and a 3-1-0 mark in conference. Last weekend, the Black Bears split the series with the University of New Hampshire. In the 2019-20 season, the Black Bears went 15-14-8 overall and 9-11-7 in the Hockey East.
 
Who to Watch
 Three out of four of University of Maine's top scorers return this season, including Ida Kuoppala who led the team last season in points (33) with 19 goals and 14 assists. Other returning top scorers include Līga Miljone and Ali Beltz.
 
Currently, sophomore Ida Kuoppala leads the team in points (5) with four goals and one assist. She earned All-USCHO Rookie Team Honors last season.
