Women's Hockey 2019-20 Season Review

2019-20 WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY

• The Friars finished with an 18-14-4 overall record and 15-10-2 mark in the Hockey East Conference during the 2019-20 season. Providence finished in fourth place in the conference, hosting New Hampshire in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Head Coach Matt Kelley has now guided his team to the Hockey East Tournament in his first two seasons at the helm. 

• The Friars defeated No. 3 Northeastern to open league play after posting a 1-0 shutout over the Huskies in Schneider Arena on Oct. 25. Providence was the only team in the country to take two games from the Huskies, being responsible for half of their losses, as Northeastern finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country with a 32-4-2 overall record.
 
• The Friars held a season long winning streak of four games spanning from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30. Providence won 3-2 on home ice to begin the winning streak before defeating Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23. Providence then defeated Brown in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup, 10-0. The ten goals marked the most goals scored by a team in the Mayor's Cup history and first time the Friars have scored ten goals since Feb. 4, 2007, when they defeated Vermont, 10-1.
 
• Eighteen Friars tallied a point this season with 16 players recording a goal. Ten players finished in double digits in Hjalmarsson (28), Dove (28), DeBlois (23), Rickard (20), Lunny (18), Burton (14), Fransoo (14), Van Pelt (12), Murphy (11) and Rice (10).

• Sophomore Sara Hjalmarsson and Senior Whitney Dove tied for the team-lead in points this season (28). Hjalmarsson scored a team-high 17 goals, the only player in double digits for goals, while adding 11 assists. Dove found the back of the net nine times as she tallied a team-high 19 assists.

Sandra Abstreiter and Clare Minnerath shared time in net this season for the Friars. Abstreiter posted a 9-9-2 overall record while Minnerath recorded an identical nine wins with a 9-5-2 overall record. Abstreiter finished the season with a 1.74 goals against average and .929 save percentage while Minnerath earned a 2.06 goals against average and .906 save percentage. The duo combined to make 779 saves with Abstreiter picking up 448 saves compared to Minnerath's 328 saves.

•  Whitney Dove earned Hockey East Second Team All-Star honors as freshman Lauren DeBlois was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team. DeBlois ranked third on the team in points (23) with six goals and 17 assists.
