Puck Drop
The Friars will be on the road this weekend for a pair of Hockey East match ups. First, the Friars will faceoff against the UConn Huskies in Storrs, Conn. on Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. before traveling up to Orono, Me. to play the University of Maine Black Bears at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21.
Split Series Versus Boston College
Providence is coming off a home-and-home series against Boston College. The Friars split the series, defeating the Eagles, 2-1, on Friday, Nov. 12 at Schneider Arena before falling to BC in overtime, 1-2, in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) propelled the team to a 2-1 win against the Eagles on Friday, scoring both goals for the Friars. On her first goal, Barnett evened the playing field, 1-1, on her first goal of the season. Barnett netted the game-winner, and her second goal of the night, with 4:20 remaining in regulation. Barnett created a turnover and
Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) dished it back on the 2-on-1 to make it a 2-1 game. The assist served as Clark's first career point as a Friar.
Mireille Kingsley (Sudbury, Ontario) posted 42 saves in the victory, a career high, making multiple game-saving stops down the stretch. The game served as Kingsley's first start in net against a Hockey East and nationally ranked opponent.
In the second game of the series, Boston College struck first again before
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) got the Friars on the board, 1-1, with a power play goal at 17:08 into the second period. Bochna was assisted by
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) and
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.). The Eagles found the game-winner, 2-1, at the 1:24 mark of overtime. Kingsley finished the night with 40 saves and a .952 save percentage. It marked the second consecutive night the sophomore recorded 40 or more saves in net.
The Friars are led offensively by
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Bochna and Becker have each put up seven points over the season. Bochna's seven comes from four goals and three assists while Becker has tallied two goals and five assists.
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) and
Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) have served as defensive threats for the Friars. Lunny has recorded a team-high 18 blocked shots while Tyo has 17. Tyo has proved to be a versatile player, as she ranks second on the team in assists (four).
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) has served the majority of the time between the pipes for the Friars with 234 goals saved for a .944 save percentage and 1.70 goals against average. Sophomore
Mireille Kingsley has recorded 98 saves through 181:04 minutes in net for a .961 save percentage and 1.33 goals against average.
Hockey East Award Winners
Most recently,
Mireille Kingsley (Sudbury, Ontario) was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced by the league on Nov.15. Kingsley was recognized for her efforts between the pipes after a split series with No. 7 Boston College. Game one against the Eagles served as her first start against a Hockey East and ranked opponent. Kingsley tallied 43 saves through 60 minutes, a career-high. On Saturday, Kingsley notched 40 saves to complete two 40 + save performances on the weekend. Kingsley had a combined 82 saves over Boston College, for a .965 save percentage on the weekend. The sophomore improves to a .950 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average on the season.
Scouting the Huskies
UConn holds a 11-2-1 overall record with a 6-2-1 Hockey East conference record. Last weekend the Huskies fell to Maine, 0-1, before tying the Black Bears, 4-4, in the final game of the series the following night.
Who to Watch
Leading the Huskies in points is Tylor Wabick (11) with one goal and a team-high 10 assists. The most goals have come from Viki Harkness (six) who recorded two points off of one goal and one assist in the series finale against Maine last weekend. 18 different Huskies have scored a point for UConn this season.
Defensively, Alex-Anne Boyer leads the team in blocked shots (23) while Samantha Carpentier-Yelle has spent the majority of minutes in-net for the Huskies. Carpentier-Yelle holds a .912 save percentage on the season with a 1.73 goals against average. Megan Warrener has also seen action in-net this season, with a .950 save percentage and .83 goals against average over 217:42 minutes played.
Scouting the Black Bears
The Black Bears enter the game at 4-8-1 (2-5-1. HEAW). In their last weekend of play, Maine took home a win, 1-0, and a shootout victory, 4-4, over Hockey East opponent UConn.
Who to Watch
Ida Kuoppala and Ally Johnson have been the difference-maker for the Black Bears this season, both recording a team-high nine points. Johnson has six goals and three assits while Kuoppala has recored two goals and seven points. Kuoppala scored one goal and two assists in last weekend's series finale against UConn.
On the defensive side, Taylor Leach has blocked a team-high 23 shots. Loyrn Porter has served as starting goalie for the Black Bears this season. Porter has stopped 298 shots through 13 games, holding a .917 save percentage with a 2.71 goals against average.
