Last Time Out…
- Jackson Pierson scored with 19.5 seconds remaining in overtime as New Hampshire downed the No. 8 Providence College men's hockey team on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center. Providence claimed seven of the nine points up for grabs over the three-game set against the Wildcats over the past week.
- UNH struck first at 3:11 of the first period as Tyler Ward's wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic and past Stauber.
- The Friars had multiple chances on their two power-play opportunities of the period but couldn't convert.
- Providence continued its strong play into the second period, outshooting the Wildcats by a 10-6 margin and finally leveled things at 7:21 of the period on Parker Ford's fourth tally of the season. Jamie Engelbert and Riley Duran earned the assists on the play.
- Both teams exchanged multiple scoring chances in the third period and overtime, but it was UNH's Pierson that took advantage of a turnover in 3-on-3 play and beat Stauber on the backhand with 19.5 seconds left in the extra session.
- Brett Berard's eight-game point streak to begin the season ended on Saturday night.
-The Friars' five-game winning streak over the Wildcats was snapped at five games.
 
Richard Named Hockey East Defender of the Month
- Providence College freshman defenseman Guillaume Richard (Cap-Sante, Que.) was announced as Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Month for October on Wednesday (Nov. 3).
- The 2021 draft choice of the Columbus Blue Jackets (4th round, pick 101) recorded a goal and four assists, with a league-best +10 rating during the month of October. Richard is part of a Friars defense that has surrendered only 19 goals through nine games played this season (2.11 GAA).
 
A Look at UMass...
The Minutemen enter this weekend's series at 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Hockey East play by virtue of a two-game sweep over Merrimack last weekend. Colin Felix scored with 4.7 seconds left in regulation to give UMass a 2-1 win on Friday night, while Scott Morrow scored a power-play goal 1:59 into overtime for a 5-4 win on Saturday night in Amherst.
 
Friars Represented On 2022 U.S. National Junior Team
Nate Leaman returns as head coach of the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team, while Friar Director of Hockey Operations, Theresa Feaster also returns to the staff as a video caoch. Two Friars appeared in the 2021 Summer Showcase: Brett Berard and Chase Yoder. The U.S. National Junior Team will take part in the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. Team USA is seeking its sixth medal in seven years at the event.
 
Two Current and Future Friars Selected in 2021 NHL Draft
Freshman defenseman Guillaume Richard was selected in the fourth round (101st) overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while 2022 commit, Taige Harding, was taken by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round (91st overall).
 
Leadership Group Announced
Senior Mike Callahan returns for his third stint as captain for the Friars this season. Alternate captains include: Max Crozier, Parker Ford and Kohen Olischefski.
 
A Third Period Five-Spot
The five-goal outburst in Friday's thrilling victory over Denver was the first five-goal third period by the Friars since a 10-4 victory over AIC on Oct. 19, 2013.
 
Rising in the Polls
The No. 7/8 Friars rose one spot in the USCHO and stayed pat in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls after a win and overtime loss against New Hampshire last weekend.
 
Meet the New Guys
Providence welcomed in a nine-member incoming class for this season - six freshmen and three transfer student-athletes. The freshmen are: Michael Citara, Graduate transfers include: Austin Cain (Western Michigan), Alex Esposito (Vermont) and Kohen Olischefski (Denver).
 
Balanced Scoring
Seven players recorded at least two points in Providence's season-opener against Army on Oct. 2 - Brett Berard (2-0-2), Nick Poisson (0-2-2), Patrick Moynihan (1-1-2), Michael Callahan (1-1-2), Craig Needham (1-1-2) and Parker Ford (1-1-2) all recorded two points while Guillaume Richard led the team with three points (1-2-3). Through seven games, 21 players have already found the scoresheet, while freshmen have accounted for 15 points on six goals and nine assists. The Friars are tied for third nationally with 36 goals scored this season.
 
Engelbert Breaking Out
Junior Jamie Engelbert's eight points through the season's first nine games have already exceeded his output from his freshman and sophomore seasons combined. Engelbert has registered a point in seven of nine outings this year and currently rides a four-game point streak.
 
Returning Production
Providence ranked sixth in the nation with 84 goals that returned this season. The 82% of returning goals ranked fourth nationally. The Friars also returned 76% of their points from last season, which also ranked sixth.
 
Youth Movement
The Friars have the 16th youngest roster in the NCAA this season (average age of 21 years, 11 months). Freshman Guilluame Richard is one of the younger players on an NCAA roster this year at 18 years and 8 months.
 
Fourteen Former Friars Participate in NHL Training Camps, Seven Earn Roster Spots
Providence boasts 14 former players that have participated in NHL training camps thus far in September. Noel Acciari (FLA), Kasper Bjorkqvist (PIT), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (EDM), Jack Dugan (VGK), Brandon Duhaime (MIN), Jon Gillies (NYI), Mark Jankowski (NJ), Brian Pinho (WSH), Greg Printz (ANA), Kevin Rooney (NYR), Brandon Tanev (SEA), Tyce Thompson (NJ) and Jake Walman (STL). Acciari, Bryson, Duhaime, Rooney, Tanev, Thompson and Walman all made opening night rosters, while Duhaime made his NHL debut on Oct. 15 in Anaheim. Bjorkqvist was recently recalled by the Penguins from Scanton-Wilkes Barre (AHL) and could see his first NHL action.
 
Three is the Magic Number
The Friars are 178-19-20 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.
 
After 40
The Friars are 162-7-17 all-time under Nate Leaman when holding a lead after two periods.
 
Series History vs. UMass (PC leads 48-31-8, .598)
UMass has had the better of the success in recent years between the two teams, posting a 7-1-2 record over the last 10 meetings. Providence is winless (0-5-1) in their last six trips to the Mullins Center, with their last win coming on Feb. 24, 2017. The Friars have not defeated the Minutemen since a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena on Feb. 23, 2019.
