Garrett Devine scored his first-career goal for the Friars but it wasn't enough as No. 16 Northeastern downed the No. 13 Providence College men's hockey team on Saturday night (Dec. 4) at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern's Gunnarwolfe Fontaine got the Friars again with a late first period goal as he beat Stauber through the five-hole with 52.7 seconds left.
- The Friars dominated the pace in the second period, outshooting the Huskies by a 16-3 margin but the hosts capitalized off a turnover and took a 2-0 lead off the stick of Matt Demelis with 9:28 to go in the period.
-Providence finally broke through and it was junior
Garrett Devine with his first-career goal after putting home a rebound from
Brett Berard with 7:26 remaining in the second period.
Nick Poisson earned the secondary assist on the play.
-The Friars couldn't notch the equalizer as Northeastern's Jack Hughes scored on an odd-man rush with 2:35 remaining and added an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left to seal the contest.
-The Friars outshot the Huskies, 35-19 and out-attempted them 67-30. Northeastern blocked 19 shots on the night.

Parker Ford won 17-of-22 faceoffs on Saturday.
A Look at Princeton...
The Tigers enter the weekend winless in their last seven games (0-6-1), including a 1-0 OT loss at Union and a 4-1 loss at RPI last weekend. Finn Evans and Ian Murphy pace the Tigers with four goals and four assists each, while Corey Andonovski and Pito Walton follow with seven points each. In goal, Jeremie Forget and Aidan Porter has shared duties between the pipes. Forget has a 1-2-1 record with a 4.17 GAA and .846 save percentage while Porter is 2-4-0 with a 2.59 GAA and .897 save percentage. Former Friar grad transfer, who played with the Friars during the 2017-18 season, is now an assistant coach at his alma mater.
Berard Named Hockey East Player of the Week and Month
Berard, who was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday after his six-point weekend against Dartmouth and Brown, currently leads all Hockey East players in scoring in his sophomore season at Providence with 10 goals and 12 assists in 19 games played. During the month of November, Berard registered 10 points on three goals and seven assists with nine points coming over the final five games of the month.
Friars Represented On 2022 U.S. National Junior Team
Brett Berard was recently named to the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster.
Nate Leaman returns as head coach of the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team, while Friar Director of Hockey Operations,
Theresa Feaster also returns to the staff as a video coach. The U.S. National Junior Team will take part in the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. Team USA is seeking its sixth medal in seven years at the event.
Two Current and Future Friars Selected in 2021 NHL Draft
Freshman defenseman
Guillaume Richard was selected in the fourth round (101st) overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while 2022 commit, Taige Harding, was taken by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round (91st overall).

Senior Mike Callahan returns for his third stint as captain for the Friars this season. Alternate captains include:

Providence welcomed in a nine-member incoming class for this season - six freshmen and three transfer student-athletes. The freshmen are:

Balanced Scoring
Seven players recorded at least two points in Providence's season-opener against Army on Oct. 2 -
Brett Berard (2-0-2),

Patrick Moynihan (1-1-2),
Michael Callahan (1-1-2),
Craig Needham (1-1-2) and
Parker Ford (1-1-2) all recorded two points while
Guillaume Richard led the team with three points (1-2-3). Through 19 games, 21 players have already found the scoresheet, while freshmen have accounted for 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists.
Special Teams Success
The Friars now ranks second in the NCAA on the power play with a .302 success rate. The penalty kill ranks fourth nationally, checking in at 90.0%. Providence has killed off the last 17 opponent power play opportunities.
Returning Production
Providence ranked sixth in the nation with 84 goals that returned this season. The 82% of returning goals ranked fourth nationally. The Friars also returned 76% of their points from last season, which also ranked sixth.
Youth Movement
The Friars have the 16th youngest roster in the NCAA this season (average age of 21 years, 11 months). Freshman Guilluame Richard is one of the younger players on an NCAA roster this year at 18 years and 8 months.
Fourteen Former Friars Participate in NHL Training Camps, Seven Earn Roster Spots
Providence boasts 14 former players that have participated in NHL training camps thus far in September. Noel Acciari (FLA), Kasper Bjorkqvist (PIT), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (EDM), Jack Dugan (VGK), Brandon Duhaime (MIN), Jon Gillies (NYI), Mark Jankowski (NJ), Brian Pinho (WSH),
Greg Printz (ANA), Kevin Rooney (NYR), Brandon Tanev (SEA),
Tyce Thompson (NJ) and Jake Walman (STL). Acciari, Bryson, Duhaime, Rooney, Tanev, Thompson and Walman all made opening night rosters, while Duhaime made his NHL debut on Oct. 15 in Anaheim.

Devine Nets First-Career Goal
Junior
Garrett Devine tallied his first-career goal on Saturday at Northeastern. It also marked the first collegiate point for the Windsor, Colorado native.
Series History vs. Princeton (PC leads 23-12-3, .645)
The Friars and Tigers will meet for 39th and 40th times this weekend and it mark the first meeting since the 2011 Denver Cup, where the Tigers scored 3-1 win. Princeton makes its first visit to Schneider Arena since 2002 and the teams have only met four times overall since the Friars joined Hockey East.
