LAST TIME OUT
- Patrick Moynihan and Nick Poisson scored but the Friars couldn't overcome an early deficit as Boston University scored a 5-2 win over the No. 17 Providence College men's hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Agganis Arena.
- Wilmer Skoog on the Terriers on the board at 1:29 of the first period as he converted on an odd-man rush.
- Ethan Phillips gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead at 13:04 after intercepting a clearing attempt and firing a wrist shot over the blocker of Stauber.
- The Friars came out strong in the second period, outshooting Boston University by a 16-6 margin. Patrick Moynihan cut the deficit in half at 14:24 with his ninth goal of the season after he one-timed a backhand pass from Davis Bunz.
- Skoog's second of the game extended the BU lead back to two after he fired a shot directly off a faceoff past Stauber.
- Domenick Fensore gave the Terriers a 4-1 lead on the power play at 6:51.
- Nick Poisson tried to start a rally as he cashed in on the power play for his eighth of the season to make it a 4-2 game. Brett Berard earned his second assist of the game on the play.
- Jay O'Brien sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 1:50 remaining.
- The Friars' unbeaten streak was snapped at three games (2-0-1).
- With two assists, Berard reached the 30-point plateau for this season (13-17-30).
 
A Look at UConn...
The Huskies enter Friday's matchup winners of three of the last four outings. UConn rode a three-game winning streak before suffering a 2-0 defeat against No. 2 Quinnipiac on Sunday in the Connecticut Ice Championship game. Jachym Kondelik paces the Huskies with 21 points on eight goals and 13 assists, while sophomore Ryan Tverberg has posted 18 points on nine goals and nine assists. Transfer Darion Hanson has started in 22-of-23 games this season, posting a 2.37 GAA and .919 save percentage.
 
A Look at Vermont...
The Catamounts will faceoff against Northeastern on Friday night before visiting Schneider Arena on Saturday. Last weekend, Vermont split a two-game home series against Alaska-Fairbanks. The Catamounts claimed the opener, 2-0, before falling the next night, 3-0, to the Nanooks. The team boasts three double-digit point scorers – Philip Lagunov (6-7-13), Andrew Lucas (2-8-10) and Robbie Stucker (3-7-10) lead the team in scoring. In goal, Gabe Carriere has started 14 games with a 2.39 GAA and .921 save percentage, while Tyler Harmon has appeared in 10 games, sporting a 2.65 GAA and .901 save percentage.
 
Series History vs. UConn (PC leads 14-4-3, .738)
The Friars and Huskies will conclude their season series on Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford.  The teams split four games in the 2020-21 season, with the Friars earning a 6-1 in on the road in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Providence earned a 6-4 win at Schneider Arena back on Nov. 13 of this season. All-time, the Friars are 4-0-2 at the XL Center against the Huskies.
 
Series History vs. Vermont (PC leads 30-28-11, .514)
The Friars and Catamounts meet for the third time this season on Saturday after Providence earned a two-game sweep in Burlington back on Nov. 19-20. Overall, Providence is currently unbeaten over Vermont in the previous seven meetings (4-0-3).
 
Stauber Named Hobey Baker Nominee
Providence College junior goaltender Jaxson Stauber (Plymouth, Minn.) has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in Division I men's hockey. Stauber ranks seventh in the NCAA with 15 victories, seventh in shutouts (4), 13th in save percentage (.927) and third in minutes played (1546:25). The junior has surrendered two or fewer goals in 16-of-24 starts this season in posting a 2.15 goals-against average.
 
Taige Harding Added to the Roster
The Providence College men's hockey program has added Taige Harding (St. Albert, Alta.) to the roster for the second half of the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-7-inch, 230-pound defenseman will wear No. 27 with the Friars. A third-round selection (91st overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2021 NHL Draft, Harding joins the Friars after spending two and a half seasons with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). As a captain for the Oil Barons in 2021-22, Harding ranked second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points in 37 games. He also was named AJHL Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. In 99 career games with Fort McMurray, he amassed 20 goals, 36 assists and 154 penalty minutes.
 
Balanced Scoring
Seven players recorded at least two points in Providence's season-opener against Army on Oct. 2 - Brett Berard (2-0-2), Nick Poisson (0-2-2), Patrick Moynihan (1-1-2), Michael Callahan (1-1-2), Craig Needham (1-1-2) and Parker Ford (1-1-2) all recorded two points while Guillaume Richard led the team with three points (1-2-3). Through 29 games, 22 players have already found the scoresheet, while freshmen have accounted for 46 points on 15 goals and 31 assists.
 
Special Teams Success
The Friars now ranks third in the NCAA on the power play with a .279 success rate. The penalty kill ranks 10th nationally, checking in at 87.0%.
 
Returning Production
Providence ranked sixth in the nation with 84 goals that returned this season. The 82% of returning goals ranked fourth nationally. The Friars also returned 76% of their points from last season, which also ranked sixth.
 
Youth Movement
The Friars have the 16th youngest roster in the NCAA this season (average age of 21 years, 11 months). Freshman Guilluame Richard is one of the younger players on an NCAA roster this year at 18 years and 8 months.
 
Fourteen Former Friars Participate in NHL Training Camps, Seven Earn Roster Spots
Providence boasts 14 former players that have participated in NHL training camps thus far in September. Noel Acciari (FLA), Kasper Bjorkqvist (PIT), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (EDM), Jack Dugan (VGK), Brandon Duhaime (MIN), Jon Gillies (NYI), Mark Jankowski (NJ), Brian Pinho (WSH), Greg Printz (ANA), Kevin Rooney (NYR), Brandon Tanev (SEA), Tyce Thompson (NJ) and Jake Walman (STL). Acciari, Bryson, Duhaime, Rooney, Tanev, Thompson and Walman all made opening night rosters, while Duhaime made his NHL debut on Oct. 15 in Anaheim. On Jan. 2, Bjorkqvist made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks.
 
Three is the Magic Number
The Friars are 188-20-20 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.
 
After 40
The Friars are 170-7-18 all-time under Nate Leaman when holding a lead after two periods.
 
Riley Duran Named Hockey East Rookie of the Week
Duran scored twice in the third period of Providence's 2-1 win at No. 9/8 UMass on Friday night. The freshman's game-winning goal came with 3:42 left in regulation, just nine seconds after UMass had tied the game. He finished the weekend with two goals and seven shots on goal. The rookie forward has totaled eight goals and nine assists for 17 points this season with a +7 rating. Sixteen of his 17 points and all eight goals have come at even strength this season.
