PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, November 1. The race will be held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va. The women's 6k race will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8k race at 10:40 a.m.
The Friar women enter the race ranked 12th nationally and first in the Northeast Region.
Leading the way for the women will be graduate student
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England), senior
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) and graduate student
Alex Millard (Kent, England). On Friday, October 18, the Friars finished second out of 22 teams at Princeton Fall Classic. May had a successful first place finish (19:16.3), followed by Millard in fifth place (19:36.2) and Flockhart in 10th place (19:51.2).
Also expected to compete at the BIG EAST Championship will be senior
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland), senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland), junior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland), and freshman
Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). Rounding out the squad will be junior
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland). Buckley, the 2022 BIG EAST Individual Cross Country Champion, will be running her second race of the season at the BIG EAST Championship.
The Friar women finished second out of 11 teams last at the 2023 BIG EAST Championship, led by an impressive second-place finish by May (20:06.5). The Friar women have claimed eight BIG EAST team titles and 11 individual titles all-time.
The Friar men's team enters the race ranked seventh in the Northeast Region.
The men's team is led by senior
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) who had an impressive race at the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday, October 18, as he placed 22nd (23:22.8). Also leading the Friars is graduate student
Liam Back (New Plymouth, England), who finished third (24:23.11) in the New England Championship on Friday, October 11. Morgan and Back will be joined by graduate student
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia), junior
Luke Coffin (Annapolis, Md), junior
Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand), freshman
Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland), and freshman
Liam McCay (Liverpool, England).
At the 2023 BIG EAST Championship, the Friar men finished fourth out of nine teams, led by Back with an eighth-place finish (25:22.5). The Friar men's program has captured 15 BIG EAST team titles and 11 individual titles.
