The No. 25 Friars will travel to Clemson, S.C. to play the seventh-ranked and ninth-seeded Clemson Tigers on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
NO. 25 MEN'S SOCCER TRAVELS TO CLEMSON FOR NCAA SECOND ROUND MATCH... The No. 25 Friars will travel to Clemson, S.C. to play the seventh-ranked and ninth-seeded Clemson Tigers (14-2-4) on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 p.m. This will mark PC's ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Second Round. The Tigers have won two of the last three NCAA College Cups. The Friars' lone NCAA Tournament match-up against Clemson occurred in 2019, when Providence suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss in the NCAA Third Round at Clemson.
NO. 25 MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS BUCKNELL IN NCAA FIRST ROUND MATCH ON CHAPEY FIELD...The No. 25 Providence College men's soccer team defeated the Bucknell Bison, 2-1, in an NCAA First Round match on Thursday, Nov. 21 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 14-11-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Graduate students Aidan Davock (Med- way, Mass.) and Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) scored the PC goals to send the Friars to the NCAA Second Round for the ninth time in program history and first time since 2021.
TOP-20 RPI SHOWDOWN... Providence and Clemson both enter the NCAA Second Round match ranked in the top-20 of the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). The Friars are No. 18 while the Tigers check-in at 12 in RPI.
FRIARS STAY PERFECT AT HOME IN NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY... With Thursday's 2-1 win over Bucknell in the NCAA First Round on Nov. 21, the Friars improved to 8-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament games played on their home field in Providence, R.I.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE...The Friars are currently 13-5-3 overall and ranked No. 25 in the nation.
Bruno Rosa and Israel Neto have each recorded double digits in the points column. Rosa owns 16 points on five goals and six assists. Neto has tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists
Neto has scored a goal in six of the last seven games, including four game winning goals. He has scored a goal in all four of the Friars' postseason games (three BIG EAST Tournament games and one NCAA Tournament game).
PROVIDENCE ADVANCES TO NCAA SECOND ROUND FOR A NINTH TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY...Sunday's match against Clemson will mark the Friars' ninth appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
FRIARS EARN NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2021, MARKING THEIR 12TH APPEARANCE ALL-TIME.. The Friars are making their 12th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament, and sixth appearance under the direction of 13th-year Head Coach Craig Stewart. The Friars' most recent appearance in the NCAAs was in 2021. Providence earned victories over Marist (2-0) in the First Round and went on to defeat No. 14 Marshall (2-1 OT) in the Second Round, before losing to No. 3 Georgetown (4-1) in the Third Round. Marshall was the de- fending national champion.
In its previous 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, Providence has advanced to the Third Round four times (2014, 2016, 2019 & 2021). The Friars moved on to the Quarterfinal in 2014 and 2016.
The Friars' most notable run came during the 2014 campaign, when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal. That same season, the team won the BIG EAST Tournament title for the first time in program history.
Providence College is 14-11-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, including an 11-5-1 mark with Craig Stewart at the helm.
NO. 25 MEN'S SOCCER FINISHES AS BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNERS-UP...The second-seed- ed Friars made their seventh appearance in a BIG EAST Championship final, where they faced No. 24 and fourth-seeded Georgetown on Nov. 17 in Boyds, Md. The Friars were defeated, 2-1, by the Hoyas.
Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) scored the opening goal in the 15th minute of regulation after he passed a defender and fired a curling shot that found the right side of the net. It marked Neto's third goal in BIG EAST Tournament play.
THREE FRIARS EARN BIG EAST ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM RECOGNITION...Three Friars earned BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors following the team's impressive run in the BIG EAST Championship: sophomore Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) and graduate students Israel Neto and Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.).
Neto scored two game-winners in the Friars' BIG EAST Tournament run. He notched what proved to be the game-winner in Providence's opening round against UConn on Nov. 9 and the overtime winner versus St. John's on Nov. 13.
O'Brien scored the equalizer in the Friars' 2-1 overtime victory over St. John's in the semifinals and assisted Neto's goal in the BIG EAST Championship.
Goalkeeper Lukas Burns has played every minute in net for the Friars this season. He made 15 crucial saves during the BIG EAST Tournament, including a season-high seven in the Friars' win over St. John's. Burns is a two-time BIG EAST All-Tournament selection.
NO. 2-SEED MEN'S SOCCER SECURES OVERTIME WIN AGAINST NO. 3-SEED ST. JOHN'S, 2-1, TO ADVANCE TO THE BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FOR SEVENTH TIME...The second-seeded and 25th-ranked Providence College men's soccer team claimed a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3-seed
St. John's in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Nov. 14 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
Sophomore Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season in the 20th minute with a rocket shot that sailed past the goalkeeper and found the bottom right corner of the net. His goal tied the game, 1-1, and eventually forced overtime.
In the first minute over overtime action, Brandon Mar- shall (Wake Forest, N.C.) sent a high-cross into the box that deflected off the head of Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.) and landed at the feet of Neto who one- timed the ball into the net for the game-winning goal.
Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) recorded a season-high seven saves to help the Friars to their seventh BIG EAST Championship game appearance.
PROVIDENCE SHUTS OUT NO. 7-SEED UCONN AND ADVANCES TO THE BIG EAST SEMIFINALS FOR THE SECOND-CONSECUTIVE SEASON... The second-seeded and 25th-ranked Providence College men's soccer team defeated the No. 7-seed Connecticut Huskies, 2-0, in a BIG EAST Quarterfinal match on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Providence, R.I. The Friars will make their second consecutive BIG EAST Semifinal appearance and 16th in program history.
Graduate Student Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) scored his second goal versus UConn this season to deliver a win for the Friars. Junior Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute to seal the victory. Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) matched his season-high of five saves to record his seventh shutout of the season.
PC held a 19-13 advantage in shots, 7-5 in shots on goal and 9-3 in corner kicks.
FRIARS CLAIM SHARE EAST DIVISION TITLE...The Providence College men's soccer team defeat- ed defending BIG EAST Champion, Xavier, 1-0, in the team's final regular-season match on Saturday, Nov. 2. With the win, Providence claimed a share of the BIG EAST East Division regular-season title.
10 players are multi-goal scorers.
SECOND HALF SURGE... Providence has scored 15 of its 27 goals this season during the second half.
FRIARS ARE 1-1 AGAINST RANKED TEAMS... On September 20, Providence pulled off an upset win over No. 8 Seton Hall in their BIG EAST opener at Chapey Field in Providence, R.I. Midfielder Rodrigo Vaza recorded the game winner in the 21st minute off a give- and-go with Israel Neto. Goalkeeper Lukas Burns re- corded one save on the night to mark his third shutout of the season.
The Friars' lone loss to a ranked opponent this season came on Nov. 21, when they fell 2-1 to No. 24 Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship match.
Sunday's match against No. 7 Clemson will mark the Friars' third game against a ranked opponent.
TRANSFER POWERHOUSE... Twenty-four of the 27 Friar goals this season have come from transfer students. Transfers Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain), Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal), Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England), Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.), Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal), Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil), and Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.) have all recorded goals this season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Junior Bruno Rosa leads Providence with 16 points, five goals and six assists. Rosa converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute that sealed the Friars' victory in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals over UConn on Nov. 9. Rosa recorded the game-winning assist to Neto in the Friars NCAA First Round win over Bucknell on Nov. 21. Graduate student Israel Neto, a transfer from Caldwell University, has experienced a remarkable late-season surge, scoring all six of his goals in the Friars' last seven games. Neto scored the game-winner over the Bison with an unstoppable shot from outside the box in the 31st minute to grant the Friars their ninth NCAA Second Round berth. He delivered the golden goal just one minute into overtime to secure a thrilling semifinal victory over St. John's on Nov. 14. Neto also netted the game-winner against UConn in the quarterfinals on Nov. 9 and scored the Friars' lone goal in the BIG EAST Championship final. Neto's four postseason goals now rank him second on the team in both points (14) and goals (six), alongside his two assists this season. All-BIG EAST First-Team graduate defender, Bernardo Prego (Evora, Portugal) has recorded four on the season.
Freshman defender Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) has had a stand-out rookie season for the Friars. Teixeira has tallied three assists. He assisted on the deciding goal in the Friars' win at UConn which earned him BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Oct. 28.
Lukas Burns has played 1,874 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.96 goals against average and a 0.778 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (13-5-3) with seven clean sheets. This season, Burns was honored as the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
HEAD COACH CRAIG STEWART... Craig Stewart is in the midst of his 13th-year at Providence College and recorded his 100th career win with the Friars on Nov. 11, 2021. He enters Sunday's match against Clemson with an 128-82-36 record as head coach at Providence. Before taking over the Friars' program in 2012, he spent three seasons as head coach at Frank- lin Pierce (51-8-6). In 16 years overall as a head coach, Stewart has posted a record of 178-89-36. Stewart has built an impressive coaching career at Providence, leading the team to nine BIG EAST Championship appearances and six NCAA Tournament berths.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CLEMSON...The Tigers hold a 3-0 all-time series edge over the Friars. The Friars' only NCAA Tournament match-up against Clemson occurred in 2019, when Providence suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss in the Third Round at Clemson.
SCOUTING CLEMSON...The seventh-ranked Tigers secured the No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and enter Sunday's game with a 14-2-4 overall record. Se- curing the ninth seed, Clemson earned a First Round bye in the tournament for the 10th time in 11 seasons. Clemson ended the regular season with a 11-2-3 record and No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Tigers advanced to the ACC Championship game, but fell to Wake Forest in penalty kicks (1-1, 7-6 PKs). The Tigers have won two of the last three College Cups.
Senior and ACC Midfielder of the Year, Joran Gerbert leads the Tigers with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists. Alex Meinhard follows with 21 points on 10 goals and one assist. Gerbet, Meinhard and Adam Lundegard were each named to the ACC All-Tournament Team. Freshman Ransford Gyan has had a standout rookie season for the Tigers. With three goals and five assists, Gyan earned ACC Freshman of the Year and a spot on the All-ACC Second Team and the All-ACC Freshman Team. The Tigers have had 13 different players score goals this season. Joseph Ande- ma has been the goalkeeper of record in 16 the Tigers' 18 games. He holds an 11-2-2 record, four shutouts, a 1.16 goals-against average, and a .673 save percentage.
Clemson, the defending national champions, secured a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame in the 2023 College Cup. The victory marked the program's fourth national championship and its second in just four years.
