Goalkeeper Ryan Carney Made Six Saves for the Friars on Thursday Night

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights, 1-0, in the 2025 season-opener on Thursday, Aug. 21 in Piscataway N.J. The Friars drop to 0-1-0 to begin the season.

GAME FLOW & NOTES

• The game began physical, with five yellow cards awarded in the first 45 minutes. Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal), Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal), and Brandon Marshall (Wake Forest, N.C.) recorded cards for the Friars, while Erick Ruiz and Devon Stopek each received cards for Rutgers.
• The Scarlet Knights won the possession battle in the first half and recorded six shots, landing three on goal. 
 •.The first half saw no scoring and the teams went into the halftime scoreless.
• Rutgers opened up the scoring in the first 30 seconds of the second half (45:31) on a penalty kick scored by Dan Karsten (1-0).

• The Friars had a goal called back after an official review on a offsides call (74:31).

• Providence goalkeeper, Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.), recorded a strong save on a promising Rutgers attack (78:34).

• Rutgers held a 15-5 advantage on shots and a 7-1 advantage on shots on net.
