Volleyball Falls To St. John’s In Four Sets, 3-1

The Friars return to action on Oct. 4 at 3:00 p.m. against Seton Hall.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (9-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) fell to St. Jonh's University (5-11, 1-2 BIG EAST) in four sets (3-1) in its BIG EAST home opener on Friday, Oct. 3.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 26-24 victory in the first set.
  • The teams traded points early, tying the set at 12-12.
  • St. John's pulled ahead, forcing a Providence timeout (18-16).
  • The Red Storm extended their lead to 21-17, prompting another Friars timeout.
  • A kill by sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the set at 24-24.
  • Freshman duo Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.) and Kaia Easterbrook (Canton, Ga.) combined for a block, securing the set for PC 26-24. 

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the second set, 29-27.
  • Providence came out strong with an 11-6 lead, forcing a St. John's timeout.
  • St. John's tied the set at 13-13.
  • The Red Storm took the lead at 22-21, prompting a Friars timeout.
  • Junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) had a kill to tie the set again at 22-22.
  • The teams went back-and-forth, St. John's eventually won the set 29-27.

THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the third set, 25-21.
  • The two teams played evenly, tying the set at 12-12.
  • Providence called a timeout after St. John's took the lead at 17-15.
  • Adkins had an ace to tie the set again at 19-19.
  • St. John's pulled ahead and won the set, 25-21

FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the set, 25-22 and the match 3-1.
  • Providence came out quick with an 8-6 lead, forcing a St. John's timeout.
  • The Friars extended their lead to 12-8, prompting another Red Storm timeout.
  • A kill by Adkins advanced PC's lead to 20-17.
  • St. John's tied the set at 20-20.
  • St. John's went on a 5-2 run to win the set, 25-22 and the match 3-1.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Taylor and Adkins each recorded a double-doubles. Taylor had 16 kills and 14 digs. Adkins had 13 kills and 11 digs. 
  • Easterbrook recorded five blocks.
  • Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 22 digs.
  • The Friars notched 54 kills, nine blocks and 64 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars return to Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. On Oct. 4 at 3:00 p.m. to face Seton Hall.
