PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Seton Hall University Pirates (11-1, 1-0 BIG EAST), 72-67, on Friday, Dec. 19 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. The game marked the Friars' BIG EAST home opener. With the loss, Providence fell to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play. Freshman Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) led the Friars with 15 points. Three other Friars contributed with double digit scoring: Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) (13), Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) (11) and Jason Edwars (Atlanta, Ga.) (10).
"Tough game." Head Coach Kim English said. "Disappointed in the outcome. I thought we put ourselves in a hole in the onset of the game. I have to give the Pirates a ton of credit."
FIRST HALF:
• Seton Hall got on the board first with a made three on its opening possession.The Friars responded with a transition layup from Jamier Jones (18:52).
• After a slow start on offense from both sides, Providence grabbed its first lead of the night on a three–pointer from Jaylin Sellers. The Friars led 6-4 at the first media-timeout (15:48).
• Immediately out of the timeout, Sellers drew a foul on a mid-range jump shot and knocked down both free throws (15:35).
• Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) ended an 8-0 Seton Hall scoring run on a fast-break feed from Jason Edwards (10:31).
• Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) drew contact down low and was able to connect on both foul shots to cut the Pirates lead to two (8:46).
• After the Friars got a stop, Erhunmwunse finished on the other end with a two-hand jam to tie the game at 14, leading into the under-eight timeout (7:45).
• Providence broke the Seton Hall press out of the timeout when Edwards connected with Jones on a thunderous alley-oop dunk (7:24).
• Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) halted an 11-0 Seton Hall run with a finish above the rim. The next possession, Jones came up with a steal and threw down a breakaway dunk. The Pirates owned a 27-20 lead into the final media-timeout of the half (2:30).
• In the Friars first possession out of the timeout, Stefan Vaaks connected from three for his first points of the game (2:19).
• After both teams traded buckets, Vaaks made his way to the line and knocked down both foul shots. The Friars trailed by four with just over a minute to play (1:05).
• Seton Hall took a 35-28 lead into halftime.
• Providence shot 9-28 (32.1%) from the field, 2-12 (16.7%) from three, and 8-10 ( 80.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Seton Hall shot 13-30 (43.3%) from the field, 2-7 (28.6%) from three, and 7-10 (70.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Jones led the Friars with seven points on 3-4 shooting
• Tajuan Simpkins led all scorers with 14 points.
• Edwards, Erhunmwunse, and Sellers all chipped in with five points for Providence.
• The 28 points is the lowest scoring half for Providence this season
SECOND HALF:
• In the opening possession of the half, the Friars forced a turnover that led to Edwards being fouled on a three-point attempt. Edwards converted on all three free throws to make it 35-31, Seton Hall (19:16).
• The Pirates responded with two straight buckets of their own to make it 40-31, forcing a Providence timeout (18:29).
• Out of the timeout, Sellers connected on a driving bucket in the paint to make it 40-33 (18:14).
• Seton Hall sank a three-pointer and on the following possession Vaaks responded by hitting his second three-pointer of the night to make it 43-36 (17:42).
• Vaaks found a cutting Erhunmwunse off a screen-and-roll action to cut into the deficit (16:45).
• On a baseline out of bounds play, Jones found Edwards in the corner for another Friars three-pointer to make it 45-41 (16:07).
• Vaaks converted a layup on a driving effort to cap off a 7-0 Providence run and to make it a one possession game, 45-43 (15:24).
• Mela found Vaaks for his third three pointer of the night to make it a 10-0 Providence run and to give the Friars the lead, 46-45 (14:30).
• Floyd connected on a midrange attempt that made it 49-48, Seton Hall (11:09).
• Edwards was fouled and converted both of his free throw attempts to give Providence a 50-49 lead (10:16).
• After a two-minute scoring drought, Sellers hit two free throws to make it 53-52, Seton Hall (8:12).
• Floyd Jr. recorded a steal and got out in transition before finding Vaaks for a layup to make it 61-55, Seton Hall. The layup was the Friars' first field goal in over five minutes (5:29).
• Erhunmwunse was fouled and converted both free throws to make it 62-57, Pirates (4:24).
• Two Sellers' free throws followed by two Jones' free throws that brought the Friars within one, 62-61 (3:15).
• The Pirates committed a goaltending violation on Edwards layup that counted and gave the Friars the one-point lead (2:33).
• A driving effort from Jones gave Providence the lead after a Seton Hall bucket, 65-64 (1:53).
• Seton Hall responded with two free throws before Sellers drove and was fouled, knocking down two free throws making him a perfect 8-8 from the line and making it 67-66, Providence (1:16).
• Seton Hall connected on a three-pointer that was followed by a midrange jumper to give them the 71-67 lead with under 10 seconds remaining.
• The Friars failed to score in the final 75 seconds as Seton Hall held onto a 72-67 lead at the final buzzer.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 19-48 (39.6%) from the field, 5-23 (21.7%) from three, and 24-30 (80.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Seton Hall shot 25-55 (45.5%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from three, and 17-27 (63.0%) from the free-throw line.
• The Friars finished with four players in double figures: Vaaks (15), Sellers (13), Jones (11), Edwards (10)
• Edwards led the Friars in assists, with five.
• The Friars have registered a 60-57 mark all-time versus Seton Hall.
• The Friars are 31-20 all-time at the Amica Mutual Pavillion versus the Pirates.
• Ten of the last 16 games between the Friars and Pirates have been decided by six points or less.

The Friars will return to action in the New Year when they travel to Madison Square Garden to take on St. Johns. The game will take place on Saturday, Jan. 3at 12:00 p.m. and will be streamed on Fox.
