Men’s Soccer Set To Host New Haven

The Friars will host the Chargers on Monday, Aug. 25 in their home opener on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -  The Providence College men's soccer team (0-1-0) is scheduled to host the University of New Haven Chargers (1-0-0) on Monday, Aug. 25. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

FRIARS FALL TO RUTGERS IN OPENER… The Providence College men's soccer team lost to Rutgers, 1-0, on Thursday, Aug. 21 in Piscataway, N.J. With the loss, the Friars opened the 2025 season 0-1-0. Goalkeeper Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) recorded six saves in the match.
 
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS… The University of New Haven Chargers began their inaugural NCAA Division I season with a 2-1 victory over Monmouth on Thursday, Aug. 21. Before joining the Northeast Conference this year, the Chargers were NCAA Division II members and played in the Northeast 10. Last season, New Haven advanced to the NE10 Championship Game and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Coach, Tommy Mattera, was named the New England Soccer Journal's Division II Coach of the Year for 2024.
The Chargers were picked to finish seventh in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
This will be the first meeting all-time between the Chargers and Friars.
 
 
Returners
The Friars return 15 players from last year's roster, including three multi-goal scorers.


Two returners earned All-BIG EAST honors last season for the Friars. Senior forward Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) earned All-BIG EAST Second Team. Senior midfielder Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team. Both Bruno and Batista were named to the 2025 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Aug. 19.
Junior midfielder Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) enters his third season with the Friars. Throughout his career in Providence, he has solidified himself as a strong offensive threat, recording four goals and 11 assists. He was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team in 2024.

Sophomore defender Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) returns for his second season with Friars after a strong freshman campaign. He started all 22 games for the Friars and recorded three assists. He earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 28, 2024.

Graduate forward Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain) enters his second season with the Friars. He appeared in 10 games last season, scoring three goals, including two game-winners. He earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection on Aug. 26, 2024.

Junior defender Brandon Marshall (Wake Forest, N.C.) returns for his third season with the Friars. Marshall has appeared in 32 games, logging 2,324 minutes for the Friars.


Newcomers
The Friars welcome six freshman and six transfers to the 2025 roster.

In his three collegiate seasons between Maryland and Loyola, senior Caden Stafford (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) has appeared in 35 games. He has recorded eight goals and four assists and earned All-Patriot League Team (2024) and All-BIG Ten Freshman Team (2022) honors. 

Graduate defender Charlie Dickerson (Norwich, England) joins the Friars after two seasons at Bradley University. He started in all 33 matches and played a team-high 2,869 minutes, while anchoring the back line.  He recorded three goals and two assists and earned MVC All-Conference Second Team honors (2024). 

Senior Ian Abbey (Elmer, N.J.) played three seasons at Rutgers (53 games), before joining the Friars. He recorded nine goals and seven assists. He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2022.


Senior midfielder Cameron Yriondo (Sammamish, Wash.) joins the Friars from Virginia after appearing in nine games for the Cavaliers in 2024. Before Virginia, he played at Seattle Pacific, where he earned First-Team All-GNAC honors in 2023.
Other transfers include senior goalkeeper Colin Gallagher (Safety Harbor, Fla.) from Virginia and graduate student Fernando Garcia Gil (Spain).


The incoming freshman class includes Giuseppe Ciampa (Westwood, Mass.), Michael Vella (Westwood, Mass.), Angelo Ventrella (Toronto, Canada), Jeremy Munoz (Rahway N.J.), Mayowa Ajayi (Westbury N.J.) and Connor Winters (Medford, N.J.).

BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES POLL… The Providence College men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST East Division in 2025 earning 56 points. The Friars finished last season with a 5-1-2 mark in conference play and shared the East Division regular-season title with St. John's.
 


UP NEXT… The Friars stay at home to host the Boston College Eagles (1-0-0) on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
